AZ accident - 15th February 2009 - "Man falls 250 after parachute fails to open"

In reply to:
PHOENIX – A rescue team is responding to an apparent parachutist accident.

The Maricopa County Technical Rescue Team tells 3TV a parachutist-involved accident took place Sunday just before 2 p.m. near Bush Highway and Stuart Mountain Road.

MCSO spokesperson Doug Matteson tells 3TV a man was attempting to jump from either a plane or a base jump and fell 250 feet when his parachute failed to open.

There is no information on the extent of injuries at this time.

3TV has a crew on the way and azfamily.com will provide more information as it becomes available.

The name of the location, which I've edited out, seems to make it fairly certain this is not a plane accident, if the geographic description doesn't.

Would be useful to understand whether this was a total, low pull or whatever - "parachute fails to open" when reported in the press can mean a multitude of things.

Condolences to the family and the other jumpers there... Unsure

The information I have from a friend out there was that it was a 180 with multiple cliff strikes. The jumper was not a local.

I'm told from someone at the scene that it was from a cliff strike from a 180. Serious head injury. Skydiving helmet.
