I mean if you solo off the Perrine it's not a solo, right?

Out of my 3 solos: 1 whuffo GC and 2 cellular GC

Just curious of the different thoughts...

hahahaha... how many Potato solos went in? how many other non-potato solos went in around the world? it seems that a Perrine 'solo' still qualifies as a solo if the guy only gets found because he smells the LZ up 2 days later. or they only know he is there because he is not answering his cell phone.

I'd say a solo is all by yourself, no groundcrew, no phone groundcrew, etc..

I was going to comment on Perrine solos too. The weirdest feeling in the world was when I went to jump and there wasn't a single person watching. Nobody driving over the bridge. It was just completely alone... and the most public jump... I'll never forget that feeling.

I guess it's a progressive scale...it seems to me it gets more scary as you move down your list! So, maybe they are all "solo" or whatever...but the experience deepens as you go "more" solo.

I think a solo is you're the only person present. Otherwise you still have some kind of support logistically and emotionally. Even if they are not on the object with you.

Solo to me = going on your own with no GC

This is kinda why I did the other poll; my thoughts are that if you are at the top of the object, alone, then it is a solo. If you have ground crew at the bottom, I feel that while you may not be technically alone, you are still making a solo jump.

If you are on the top of a building by yourself, you've got no one else to joke the nervousness off, or double check your gear, or second guess your decision. To me that's a solo jump irregardless of whether or not someone is on the ground watching.

I'd say if you're the only person present. This is just me coming from a climbing background though.

If I'm gonna go out and do a long route I'll usually call and let someone know my estimated return time. That way IF something does go wrong, and you're not back, they can come lookin' (or in a mountain scenario, call in a rescue).

But there is a certain "purity" it seems in just going out on your own. When "you're the only one who knows what's about to happen".

Solo...only one to depend on and save your ass is yourself. That's the way I like it, though I solo mainly because of the seventy mile drive to hook up with other jumpers, and my screwed up schedule of working most weekends in e.d.. I won't go into spirituality of solo jumps, I try to deny the touchy/feely part of me! They are a true test of intestinal fortitude, hiking/climbing/solo gear checks, but the high is as good as it gets. That said, someone come down and jump with me dammit!!!

After valentines, i need to check out that E sometime soon.

better hurry. everything is falling off of it!! Seems likely it will be terminated sometime, cuz there's definitely been no maintenance in months . Definitely want to leave my mark, monica lewinsky style, on her before armageddon.

Websters's definition is "done or performed by one person; unaccompanied; alone".
IMHO having GC is not a true solo. Jumping alone while having phoned your intent seems worthy of solo status. Being the only person who knows is in a class of it's own and deserves it's own name. Maybe "pure solo". Example: "How many pure solo's do you have?"

So now you'll have to come up with a name for all kinds of solos.

You've got:

1) Only one jumping but multiple at exit point
2) Only base jumper at exit, but spectators
3) Only one at exit point but base jumpers being GC at bottom
4) Only one at exit point but non-base jumpers being GC at bottom
5) Only one around but with phone crew
6) Only one around but you told your mom you were going to jump and you'd be back at noon
7) Only one around, no one knows, but you have cell service.
8) Only one around, no one knows, outside cell service.

I could probably go on.

Solo to me is only person around because I get a much different feeling when i'm the only jumper when people or gc are there versus when it just me w/o ground crew. I had two "solos" off perrine, one with a sepctator one without, and three off an A two with a ground crew, one without. all the times with anyone around it gives you a more secure feeling, opposed to you alone with no gc. So i figure i've had 2 solo jumps
