lowest freefall over water?
John Hover of Norman OK. (Deceased) freefell a 160ft cliff over water on a regular basis. Don't know if that's the lowest or not.

Re: [baseknut] lowest freefall over water?
Oliver Favre set the world record high dive in 1987 in France at 177ft. I've jumped 145 over water, and I'm guessing even with a line twisted, line overed, torn canopy...in deep enough water you'd probably still be fine. The drag should help you go in straight, just cup your nuts and keep your feet together. There was also a thread on here a while back about a box rig jump from something like 200 ft. Dude did a gainer.

If what your landing on is soft enough you don't need a parachute, depending on the height of course. 110ft over pavement is crazy though Laugh

I heard a story of a guy named Rob Fry (?I think?), did a gainer off of welshmans in Moab. 207' to impact (I think). oh, and the winds were so bad, nobody else even jumped.

Didnt Dwaine Weston do a double gainer from something like 182 feet bridge over solid ground, stowed? I still wanna see footage of that, that guy was from different planet...

GreenMachine,

Be careful of doing low TARDs. I have a few and on one jump it somehow snivelled. It wasn't a Mary Poppins type jump. I would say on that jump, the canopy took slightly over 100ft to open. Having looked at video afterwards, I cannot see what happened and it was nil winds also.

Re: [meekerboy] Low TARDs
Thank you for the heads up.

I was on the fence about it.

Did your canopy have vents?

Sure, the record for an experienced high diver might be 177ft, implying that lower dives are probably done more frequently.

I'd be interested to know if there's a "no man's land" range of altitude for a normal person where it's too low for a parachute and too high for a regular jump. If not, and the two types of jump overlap, then the "lowest freefall into water" doesn't really exist.

I did a 90 foot jump from a cliff into water, sans parachute. What's the highest any of us jumpers have jumped into water without a parachute? And what's the lowest with parachute?

Would you jump from a 125 foot cliff without a parachute? If so, then why not try it with a parachute?

My highest cliff dive was 92/94ft (some people argue about the exact height) without a parachute into water. Just have to clear the trees when you jump. I dont have a pic of that one but i do have a pic of me jumping a 75ft, the view isnt really much different at that point.

The cops used to tolerate us jumping the cliffs around this particular lake as long as we stayed off the bridge (110ft). Unfortunately there was a series of injuries and deaths and now if you are near the cliffs you have a good chance of getting cited or arrested.

I saw a video of a few people I know PCA'ing something like 75 ft into water. Pretty much crack, splash. Soft landings in the water.

Re: [Lukasz_Se] lowest freefall over water?
I think the jump you are thinking of was over water, but yes he did a double gainer (and I sure hope he was stowed Wink), but really, if it is the same jump, I have seen the video. He basically had the first one around before he returned to the level of the bridge.

I would jump 80 or 90' into water again, after a few 50' jumps to make sure i still can. I guess I would try the 90' with a 48" and SMALL canopy.

I want a BlackJack 180 just for this kind of thing.

Re: [meekerboy] lowest freefall over water?
Tards should be totally reliable if done properly. The problem is that sometimes people don't set them up properly. I know exactly what you are talking about - you didn't set your brakes. I have watched people accidently forget to stow the brakes and this is exactly what happens. I have also done it on purpose off Miles' bridge and ... yup... 100 foot snivel every time. Sometimes people will mate the toggle velcro and tuck the tabs but forget to set the brake. I'm guessing that they landed from a previous jump, mated the toggle velcro and then just went and threw a tard without bothering to think about the important "packing" that is still required to do an unpacked jump. The best part is when they completely deny having done this.

BTW, we have done 70 foot tards over water. About a one second canopy ride.

Hmm, so a Smart-TARD from 85 feet
on to a baseball field would be dumb?
FYI: Canopy is a Troll 285 with vents.

In North east MN, there is a few SWEET old rock quarry cliff jumps, 10-90', and a few that are only rumored to have been done that are up to 140. I am bringing my water rig next time.

Re: [GreenMachine] Low TARDs
I would imagine that to not go very well. I saw a video of a guy do it off 100' onto sand. He didn't pop toggles, but faired well, but he's got ULTRA mad skills also. Cut 15' off of that and I don't know. Maybe wait till after they water the grass. Wink

If it comes to highdiving/cliffdiving into water there has been one single person who´s been waaaaay better than anyone else ever.
His personal best was almost 400ft!
At his 80th birthday he was still jumping head first from 40m (~130ft)!
I did head first jumps from ~100ft....
I´ll see if I can find some pictures of jumps I did....
