Re: [madprops] do you think foot launching is a base jump?
do you mean unpacked jumps where there is freefall involved and it takes time for the canopy to inflate? or do you mean kiting the canopy and the n running off a hill/cliff?

Although it seems that most younger jumpers dismiss the "Old School" traditions, a BASE jump in the early days required the canopy to be packed before exit.

kiting the canopy and the n running off a cliff building or bridge

I think that every time one transitions from the ground to the air with a canopy helps with their skills as a canopy pilot. I also think that flying a BASE canopy close to the ground helps one understand how the canopy is flying, etc. it's not a BASE jump. but at the same time Balloon jumps with BASE gear help with muscle memory and reaction speed just as well as a BASE jump but are those BASE jumps?

before I got into Speed flying I would ground launch my blackjack and dagger, on skis and by foot. in fact, ski flying with my dagger alongside a skiier with a blackjack made me realize how superior a blackjack canopy is to others. the difference between him skiing over trees and me screaming for downhill people to get out of the way or i will cut their head off with my skis because i cannot get off the ground.

here are some pictures of me launching soaring my blackjack (yes, SOARING, not flying top to bottom, maintaining and gaining altitude, when winds are too strong to paraglide)

Re: [madprops] Sketchy Fun
Kiting, parasailing, ground launching, etc.
are all very fun and all very dangerous
but definitely not a BASE jump.

What if you ground launch with another rig worn over the harness, gain altitude relative to the ground then cutaway and deploy the packed rig? Skydive, base jump or just a lot of fun?

This is pretty much off the subject at hand, but more in response to jumping out of a balloon with base gear... which is exactly what this is. I was first out.. from 600 feet.. Criticize if you want, but it was fun for me!

Back to the question at hand... BASE(as everyone knows) is the acronymn for 'jumping' off a fixed object. What you are doing is "gliding" off a fixed object. If what you are doing is considered base, than I am going run down the sidewalk with an already inflated canopy, jump off a curb, and claim the record for lowest base jump ever.

LADIES. the bottom line is, IT DOES NOT MATTER. It's all fun with Wings, Nylon, Wind, Waves. drawing a line in the sand divides you. We are all the Children of Bernoulli. [tm](c)

arguing over what it is makes you look and sound like skydivers and slaves to a book of rules Unimpressed

2010-2030, depending on how long i live, how often I get bored and add to it, it is mostly about rope jumping 'theory' (the pointless simple physics of rope energy absorption rates, force vectors, resulting inertial vectors, blah blah blah), and some newbie BASE stories, building hang gliders, teenage winter mountaineering climbs, growing up in the middle class non-urban mountains, and other tales of doing really stupid things, miraculously surviving them, and attempting to learn from them.
the goal is the literary opposite of "fall of the phantom lord" ( "fall of the phantom lord" was a glorifying biography about a SUPER skilled rock climber who died rope jumping) I kinda want mine to be a semi-autobiography, semi documentary, semi "how not to do" book about a jumper who lived.

Like Gorilla Monsoon with less adventure and indigenous peoples but more daring and sky sports?

That might actually be good. You've done a lot of stupid shit that I would love to read about (meant in a good way). Who's going to write the chapter about your paragliding accident? Tongue

you know, base jumpers love to paint themselves into a corner, and try to miracously escape.
