I have been picking locks for years but I just looked through Youtube and saw something I've never heard of before. It's called lock bumping!!! Has anyone tried this technique before? It looks so easy but I was wondering!
I've only used 'em in the field once, but I was successful. Used a homemade one, but I think it would be a worthwhile investment to buy a machine cut set.
edit: it did take a bit of practice to get the feel for it
Make sure the item you use to give it a whack has a good weight/mass. this transmits more energy into the bump-key and onto the pins to lift them further.
If you make your key from a spare then make sure you practice on a different lock than that which the key was originally cut for.
I could never get the feel for bumping, plus it makes a lot of noise (or at least it did in that stairwell at night). Raking has so far been the most successful for me, either a snake pick, or a double-ball.
Raking is the same as scrubbing. With a little practice bumping is very easy. Not practical though for our needs since there are so many different keyways that we could run into. Just learn how to pick. Start with scrubbing and single pin pick any pins that weren't set by the scrub.
