Lock Bumping
I have been picking locks for years but I just looked through Youtube and saw something I've never heard of before. It's called lock bumping!!!
Has anyone tried this technique before?
It looks so easy but I was wondering!

Re: [ncjumpjunkie] Lock Bumping
I've only used 'em in the field once, but I was successful. Used a homemade one, but I think it would be a worthwhile investment to buy a machine cut set.

edit: it did take a bit of practice to get the feel for it

I bought one and never could get it to work. It does look easy on the you tube videos though.

Easy to make - does take a bit of practice. Yes they work. Easy to keep one on your key-ring.

First found out about them here

Then found this interesting site.

Then the You-Tube vids like the one here

A couple of tips:

  • Make sure the item you use to give it a whack has a good weight/mass. this transmits more energy into the bump-key and onto the pins to lift them further.

  • If you make your key from a spare then make sure you practice on a different lock than that which the key was originally cut for.

  • Practice heaps to get a feel.

I could never get the feel for bumping, plus it makes a lot of noise (or at least it did in that stairwell at night). Raking has so far been the most successful for me, either a snake pick, or a double-ball.

    Re: [katzurki] Lock Bumping
I like raking with the snake on the easy locks. Fortunately i know a guy who owns a lock company and he helped me learn.

Edit: I presume raking is the same as scrubbing.

Raking is the same as scrubbing. With a little practice bumping is very easy. Not practical though for our needs since there are so many different keyways that we could run into. Just learn how to pick. Start with scrubbing and single pin pick any pins that weren't set by the scrub.
