Vancouver Island Canada Spans
Hi all.. Im not a BASE jumper, however, I am looking for large spanning bridges/trestles to construct a largescale rope jump/swing. Figured your community might have some positive suggestions.

I am located in Victoria, BC but willing to travel, preferable on the island.

Any canucks out there? :)

There is one right in your backyard. Train trestle that is about 240 ft and better suited to swings than BASE. Then again, I have never set up a swing so WTF do I know, maybe it will suck but you won't have to travel farTongue
More info sent.........

Good info! I took your advice and made it happen :)

check out the video @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp1S3g_11UA

100ftpendulum swing.. feels like freefall all the way to the bottom because of the constant acceleration, fun :)

If someone actually base jumped this trestle, I would have the slightest clue where they would have landed.

Nice one!!
No one in their right mind would BASE jump it. That being said, it has seen one BASE jump that resulted in a tree strike. The river/creek was also much lower at the time.
Did any trains come by while you were on it? I understand that it sees about 3 trains a day.......

Congrats!

Train leaves Victoria in the morning and returns just as it is getting dark. That being said, I was there last weekend in the truss system underneath making measurements when an unscheduled train went by overhead:) (I found out later the train broke down, up island, the day before and was just being returned to Victoria) That trestle shakes like crazy. No harm done though, all safety lines were away from the tracks, but one of my climbing ropes was flaked over the tracks and is now 30 ft shorter than it was the day before :) As a testimate to the strength of a quality climbing rope, my Beal 10.3mm rope had 7 of the 10 internal strands remain in tact after being run over.. BY A TRAIN (The sheath was obliterated). I thought that was impressive.

Jump day saw no trains.

I've moved this thread to the Hangout as it really has little to do with BASE.

I'm glad some folks here were able to help!

Those top steel pillars have seen their fair share of action over the years.....
