That is one of the dumbest things Ive heard a BASE jumper do. Seriously, Agnos is just a little, a lot, fried out. but returning to the scene and bragging about the DAY BLAZE jump! then fighting with the man. have fun dealing with the stupidity fines and jail time. idiots.

People say there are a chain of events that cause accidents, not just one thing going wrong (generally). I think you can blame this on them being idiotic. do me a favor and stay off the west coast.

First of all, the object was to be caught for this. In case that wasn't evident. I can't go into details but what I was trying to accomplish is working. the jump was planned perfectly, executed well and pulled off. it was 9 hours later that we were arrested, although it was not my intention to get Nick and Tracy pinched.

Nevertheless, I have a number of meetings tomorrow morning and the W is not interested in pursuing anything against me and police charges are not coming.

Everyone in my crew knows what I was doing and why I did it. If I was a part of all of your crews I would have consulted you befored doing it. As far as "resisting" goes, even hotel security agrees that I didn't resist. Nick walked away....resisting, tracy was yelling at the cops....resisting, and I was smiling and telling Nick & Tracy not to resist....obviously resisting. Just to let you know, I was released after the probable cause hold expired because no laws were broken in the entire incisent.

how would you know no one jumps it if they FAIL to publicize it? many jumpers prefer NOT publicizing their jumps. all I can tell is the recent jump is the first jump known to the authorities (or me).

if you got to the top of a building, called the cops, threw water balloons at them when they arrived, sent it then kept screaming "it's all part of my master plan" as they drag you to the car I'd give you my vote based on effort alone. anything less then a heroic effort probably won't get it done this year. it would seem Dave has DB of 09' locked up with a loooong ways to go this year.

Just thought I would post this again. Dave also jumped a rig that was to small for the canopy. Two pin rig with over sized canopy= pc in tow, to low opening.

The story is somewhat accurate, without the additional drama of yanking on bridles, etc.

What happened is I found as I was checking my gear for a 250' B that I thought my lower pin tension was a little too tight and popped the lower pin, adjusted the closing loop and inadvertantly routed the bridle under the loop and since I didn't unstow the pilot chute I didn't pick up on the routing issue until I donned the rig, sinched up and had my pin tension checked again by another party - an easy, but deadly mistake had I not had the check done.

Now obviously this wouldn't happen during a normal pack job but only in a situation like this that just about anyone could do.

As far as the rest, this is one reason I do not like jumping alone and anytime I am at the exit point with others we always do complete gear checks. Now I don't claim to be the greatest rigger or base jumper in the world or know everything there is to know about the sport. However I do know enough about my equipment that I am confident in it and know how to maintain and use it. But it just goes to show that buddy checks can always be the difference between life and death.

In my opinion solo jumps are fun and cool, but anytime one can jump with another both are safer and less likely to make mistakes.

So in answer to your question, yes the incident did happen but as you can see it was a mistake that you or I could make and don't think for a minute that the incident hasn't haunted me. I

I do see the point that everyone is making and to tell you the truth have been seeing it for awhile now. I see that it was unthoughtful of me to advertise it, when looking back I could have accomplished my goal in other ways, which I would like to mention was not meant to be publicized as widely as it was and wasn't for the media attention. I assumed that I would get a quick blurb in the local paper and then I could go to my interests with it and the video but it hit on a much larger level than anticipated.

To everyone affected, I apologize and in case no one has noticed, I have not been giving statements or interviews or riding out a 'media circus'. It is my hope that this dies very quickly and without any implications to the sport. Locally, and for that matter nationally, this story is dead and it should be. So far, the only place keeping this dream alive is this site.

I believe as base becomes more popular and mainstream there are people getting into it believing it to be "safer" now with modern technology making up for their lack of skill and experience. You are a prime example of this....

The only true apology that would have any meaning is you stop jumping, but thankfully this is a free and unregulated sport so even someone like you can make that choice for themselves before gravity makes it for you.

No... not just about anyone would. It's either clear, or it's not clear. You don't have to pull the pc out to check that. You routed it wrong period.

Common rigging sense means... if the pilot chute is pulling on the bridle, will the container open? Is the bridle attached? Are the toggles set correctly... etc...

Adding to what Hookit said . . .

No, this is not just something anyone could (or would) do!!!

The prudent thing to do if you re-rig something on a BASE rig (after an initial pack job) is to start all over again.

In this particular case, the very least you should have done is re-rig everything downstream of the pin. That would mean pulling out the PC and bridle and starting with the now open container re-close everything including re-stowing the bridle and pilot chute.

Almost nobody dies in "normal" situations in BASE. It's when the "abnormal" occurs that you need the pre-programed alarm bells to start clanging in your head.

Please be more thoughtful . . .

--I don't think this is an 'easy' mistake. Routing the bridle UNDER the loop is a clear misrig, even if the pilot chute is still stowed. If anything, something should seem different then what has been done countless times before when closing the rig. If that doesn't cause one to sitback and investigate further this is not good. This is a case when you take a little out of the luck bag and add it to the experience bag, thankfully.

in the blackness of a night jump, do you really expect a good gear check?
what if you are jumping with someone new to you? trust them?
what happens if the other person fails to show? just go home?
how about if you have a perfect opportunity to jump, but no one can come?

rig in the comfort and convenience of your home, NOT on an object (if at all possible). take the time you require to get it right!

I left out the gear check part that you mentioned. Most people I jump with do not get one. I don't get gear checks and seldom give one unless asked or the jumper is new.

We always recommend keeping the video and picturs from the site for the same reason or posting pictures or videos for the public. This is not acceptable.

No, we do not like burning sites, so we jump them in broad day light in a major American city (I know that "major" is in debate, but this is the midwest, people) and then return to the site to play video of our jump later that day to whuffos.

FWIW, here's my take on it.

It's not ethics. It's BASE ethics.

And to me that means:

1 - Preserve sites for the next guy. And consider that next guy may be ten years old right now.

2 - Know that some aspects of BASE will change over time. Legal BASE, sanctioned events, and the latest glory hounds, will all come and go. But the core value of BASE is a constant that will never change. And its the ability for anyone with the right skills to go jump anytime they want when it doesn't conflict with number one above.

3. As BASE jumpers we are all just passing through. You aren't required to leave the sport "better" than you found it. You are required to leave it as you found it. Our greatest gift to the next generation is the same blank canvas we all enjoyed.

4. If you want to be famous, become an actor. If you want to do charitable work pick up a hammer and go build houses for the poor. If you want to be a corporate shill do it on your own account. Don't do any of those things using BASE as a crutch.

5. Being a BASE jumper doesn't give you the right not to give a shit. We already did the rebel thing a couple of BASE generations ago and it served its purpose. So don't spit in the soup others will have to eat.

BUT... an IP address is typically assigned one per internet connection. If you have a DSL/Cable connection at a dropzone, for example, and free wifi for everybody, then everybody is posting from the same IP. Or they could be neighbors, one of them leeching the other's internet. Maybe they use the same anonymous proxy to commit internet crimes.

Or more interestingly, one of them could be stalking the other, sitting in a car by the road making one last post while connected to his victim's wifi before grabbing his ghat and busting into the house and mowing the whole family down.

All possibilities that make neither of them out to be a troll. The last one is my favorite, and the outcome might even be worth a good read when it hits the forums

Ethical issues aside...we all who know Joe know that he is good...he is also, in my inexperienced opinion an asset to the dropzone. He's a character of course, but, unless I'm sadly mistaken, he does a good job with his tandem customers...listen to his bullshit on the ride up and watch the pretty landings. It gives 'em a great memory.

Joe’s comment about ethics, although misunderstood, is spot on. As I see it, we’re all a bunch of hypocrites. We go to great lengths to risk our lives. Then we criticize others for doing the same.

Maybe the point is, take the risk only when you’ve weighed all the implications. Measure your skill level, experience, training, knowledge, and ability against what could happen. Prepare and perform! Ego is a huge part of this drama fest we call sport. Kept in check, it becomes the binding glue to the brotherhood of the characters.

I had a phone conversation with Dave last week about this incident. A great number of local jumpers are looking critically at Dave’s antics. Not just base jumping, but in and around the sport as well. That aside, you still have to like the guy. He’s one of the many characters that bring us back each weekend. I tried explaining to Dave that, although I consider him a friend, he’s consistently doing things which make others in the sport, including myself, uncomfortable.

I was in the middle of dirt dive with SD when he was grounded for the low pull incident. I explained to him that I consider this an unfinished jump that I’d love to make some day. But, I also want to know that he’s going to be Super Dave (not Stupid Dave). There’re a large number of jumpers that refuse to get into an airplane with him. He’s going to have to work very hard to regain the respect and trust of the jumping community.

DQ has gone to great length to blast SD. I’m not sure if this is a personal attack or a result of over exposure to Dave’s stupid shit. Either way, these kinds of personal attacks are uncalled for and make you (DQ) look like someone with a grudge to bear. DQ… point taken but it’s time to bury the hatchet. By the way, we missed your year-end video.

From my conversation with SD, I can tell you there is no grand scheme. He has evaluated this situation and understands what he did wrong. Although I’m NOT convinced he’s done being Stupid Dave, I am convinced he’s learned from this. If making stupid mistakes is a reason for exclusion from this sport, I would have to be the first to say goodbye.

So, as a self proclaimed life-long learner/student of the sport, I would like to hear comments on, what could be learned from this episode.

Don't be a douche bag is the first thing I can think of to be learned....

Don't burn objects or sites is number two....

There are different degree's of stupidity and incompetence, I'm sure you would agree that a person who is actually mentally challenged would never be able to base jump because they simply don't have the required tools. So if we agree that there is an end of the scale where people can't jump and an point at which someone does posses the required potential to jump the next question is does Dave make it over the line of stupidity???

So in lame skydiving world there would be someone there to say no you can't jump you're too dumb, but as a self regulating body we rely on a honour system of ethics. Some of these are be careful who you train and mentor and don't sell gear to those who don't have the training or experience to use it with enough safety. So as Dave appears to be a child in the BASE world and in the real world we occasionally blame the parents for the actions of the children, who the hell trained this guy?

(as a side I don't personally know any of the people involved I just have a low tolerance for idiots coming into base and want to see less stupid people tolerance, because at the end of the day when we start to accept it and allow it, the sport dies a little more)

I have seen quite a few dumb things in SKY & BASE
that did not cause anyone to get arrested and not
always get hurt but nonetheless I shook my head.

As for your point about all of US accepting greater

From your video you looked pretty tweaked on the edge... are you sure your ready for base? basejumping takes more than a rig, some friends with a camera and some dippity-doo hair gel. Did you even look at the traffic pattern and know when the best time to jump was? If it was 460ft. building I would have taken just a wee bit more of a delay... why not have one of your posse pca you from behind the cage?
