Strange Keys
Hi Guys

Has anyone had any experience of having keys duplicated that are made from restricted blanks? If a shop says they carry them but they need them for a few hours, does that generally mean they will do it without questions, or is there some potential for funny business?

Don't worry, the keys are not for state property, mail facility, or any BASE object.

A PM would be appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Re: [stevenm] Strange Keys
restricted blanks

Not 100% sure if my story fits but here goes.

Once lost the college key I was given that got
me into my office, as well as the building and
every classroom in the Social Science Dept.

Borrow a colleague's key and went to a local
hardware store, little Mom & Pop place. The
key said "
Do Not Duplicate" which they were
not too bothered by, however they did Not
have a blank that would work.

Ran back to campus, got a blank key, and when
I got back the old guy was on the phone but the
old lady let me cut it myself, after I mentioned
I knew how from working at Scotty's in highschool.

FYI - the guy on campus who cuts the keys does
it by hand on this small metal manual round tool,
but he was out having surgery.

Good luck

It really depends on who and what you are trying to duplicate. Some locksmiths have loose morals, but are supposed to be bound by ethics.

Any knowledge I have is self taught from books and courses so take it if you want. I can pick a decent amount, rekey, and I've actually suceeded at impressioning a lock once. I solicited myself to 3 different shops around the area, but none were willing to take me on as an apprentice. They've had such bad experiences with the students leaving the nest and taking business from them. Maybe I smell. My ethics are sound, but to just do a general trespass to steal some altitude, I'd sleep at night.

I frequently get keys to restricted areas and sometimes, tall buildings. I had the key to the roof of this nice B for a few days. I had to sign it out and "forget" to return by the end of the day. Luckily, security wasn't too tight.

I took the key to a locksmith shop and asked for a copy. It had the "do not duplicate" stamped on it, but the locksmith was more interested in how I got it. That specific key was a registered BEST KABA lock. He didnt have it and if he was to order a blank, he would have to file paperwork on where it was for, who gave him authorization and so on. I exited stage left and melted into the community again.

If it is a BEST lock, you can try to find a blank match by looking for a single letter stamped on what I think is called the tongue (see picture.) I dont remeber now. The little tiny "A" is what you're looking for underneath thecopy number on the left. It might be anything from A,B,C... I bought a decent key machine and as many different kinds of blanks I could. Many off ebay and most with "do not duplicate" stamped right on them. All kinds, even for just your own house and maybe a hot neighbor's. Really nice to always make a copy of the elevator key so you can just switch it over to independent operation, and skip all the stops to other floors in a crowded building.

Now, whenever I get keys to places, I make a copy and the world is set aright.
