I just got a encyclopedia britannica from 1769. Here's a quote in the section on medicine regarding "On the stone in the gall bladder:"

In the fit, the spasms are to be appeased with anondynes and demulcents, such as oil of sweet almonds, and fresh sperma ceti, internally; externally, the fat of a wild cat, or a beaver.

Powders may be made with crabs eyes, cinnabar, and nitre, with a little faffron, powder of earth worms, elkshoofs.
