Hawaii Five-O
A few days ago in a post I mentioned my
typical process for reconning new objects
that I plan to jump solo:

1) take some digital photos
2) research any online data
3) walk the LZ in the daylight
4) scout access & get aways
5) distance to medical help
6) get to the exit point (dry run)

Now step #6 might not have started as
a planned action as much how things
usually turn out for me.

Till Santa gets here I don't have a laser
so climbing w/ my Suunto acts a double
check on the altitude data.

Plus as we all know looking at a jump
from the exit point is different than on
the ground or from your keyboard.

Someone replied step #6 is a bad idea
because it doubles my chances of getting
busted. Good point.

So after much ado, this poll is just trying
to get a feel for the statistical bust factor.

I tried to edit the poll options
but the system won't let me so
please vote
"Few Close Calls"
if you had to talk to the cops
or were chased by them.

Thanks!

Those Busted...
Please give us Ninjas * some idea
of what range of badness to expect.

* I only have 6 bandit jumps so far
hence I know with greater exposure
comes greater chances of eventually
getting pinched.

I was under an object one night taking a leak when a drunk guy on a horse with saddle bags full of beer turned up. He had some young lady with him on a horse too, funny shit. He didnt even stay to watch, just rode off drunk and said good luck.

You'd be surprised at just how many people don't give a shit what you're doing.

Re: [GreenMachine] Hawaii Five-O
One night we got ourselves one of those fancy laser thingies and for the life of me couldn't figure out how to work it. I wound up shooting myself in the eye and I think I made a hole in one.

I just lay down and look up and imagine myself standing up there and jumping. Just eyeballing it. If I run outta room before imagining the entire jump I move on . . .

Re: [GreenMachine] Hawaii Five-O
sadly, I expect more of us have been hurt than busted. make sure that aspect gets proper attention.

oh, and don't become device dependent on a laser. it may not be great at determining height of obstructions. ya got to eyeball them eventually and plan a dive around them.

p.s.
ask around. there are plenty of stories of a jumper needing an emergency room, or just hanging out in a tree. basically, a jump gone wrong and extra time spent at a site increasing the risk of arrest. it's amazing how FEW meet the guys in blue.

Re: [GreenMachine] Those Busted...
While staging for a potenial high bust factor urban jumps a few things I do as follows.

1. While scoping the object out figure out what if any security guards are there. What their rotations are. Ive actually asked one directly posing as a person who may want to work a security detail. easy.
2. If your in a city and need to avoid traffic for landing in the street. make sure you can see the traffic patterns from the exit point or have a reliable spotter.
3. While approaching the object and leaving after landing try not to run or do any crazy hollywood type entrances, ducking shadows and what not. Dont lolly ggag but draw attention to yourself. If you do decide to run it should be becasue your are being chased and you've decided to run, you should know your escape routes and have a place to ditch the rig.

there are other things, and tactics you can use. they can be fun to figure out on your own though

JD Walker, BASE 37, has BASE bust #1. Busted on all four objects.

I'm tired of cover of night jumping. >500 bandit jumps.

A little advice, the statistical bust factor significantly increases when you wear your bridge day t-shirt and land in trees Wink

On that note, when you park your car at the base of the high heat local object with the nearby DZ's bumper sticker and USPA sticker prominently displayed don't be surprised when other jumpers start calling you a douchebag.

The statistical bust factor also significantly increases if you jump with Karnowski's brother, aka the Wizard. Personally i'm more worried about him casting a spell on me than getting busted.

Re: [freeflychris] Hawaii Five-O
If you are asking about the outcome of getting busted for jumping off that hotel it looks like the charges are going to be dismissed. Its kind of hard to get us on trespassing since we had a room there and the fact that travis pastrana gets to jump there legally goes to show that jumpers aren't "vexing or annoying the owner."

On the other hand, if you were inquiring about the outcome of one of the wizard's spells just watch the video of my lineover again.

i just had a run in with a few mexicans that were camping in an orange grove. they were "picking" the next day. i may have found a few new employees when the oranges are gone.Sly
