Hey all you riggers out there.

SO. my apprentice just bought a blackjack from 2002, never jumped, with the old 5th line that I have never personally dealt with.

I inspected it pretty thoroughly the other day, looks as if, on each side of the canopy, (right/left wings) there are 5 brake lines. spaced at 0, .5, 1, 1.5, (skipping the normal 2), 2.5 cell attatchments.
I have heard bad things about not only this 5th line spacing, but the differences in line length. even bigger problem, it looks as if, on both sides of the canopy, there are TWO longer brake lines, at spacing 0 and 2.5. I assume this is normal for older blackjacks, but they were changed for a reason.

my recommendation to the jumper, is send it to asylum over break, and have the upper break cascades modded or replaced as well as a 5th line attachment point added to the "2" cell position, making it identical to my BJ and all other modern BJs.

on MY 2006 Blackjack, and every other one I have ever seen, the brake lines are all the same length, and spacing of every half cell for 5 lines.

I told this jumper that I would not mind jumping this for a few tall A's before break, but to get it done soon. adding a quad-wrapped tapegate above slider to ONLY brake lines like I always do should negate this problem for the most part. right?

thoughts? definite answers?

You've got sewing skills. You can do it easily. Move the attachment outward a rib to make it like yours, then shorten the inner and outer line to match the other 3.

I'd suggest getting the wider slider as well.

If a tension knot is going to occur, it's going to be slider up, not down. If you're concerned at all, do not chance it. Do not use it for slider up. You can jump it as much as you like slider down/off.

Get it modded or do it yourself.

The modification you are inquiring about is the upgrade to only reposition one of the upper steering lines and adjust the length of an additional one. The result will yield 5 upper control lines, all of equal length, attached to a total of 2 cells per side.

There was a discussion last April about the modification. If you do a search on 5th line you should be able to find it.

This modification applies only to Ace and Black Jack canopies manufactured prior to Dec 2004.

I CAN do it, but I do not have access to a bar-tack, and do not have the time. Ill have him send it to CR or Asylum.

I did look at the slider, it looked well made but with shady fabric. also seems to skinny like you said. Ill also have him order a new small mesh.

when I was looking at it, and I did a pretty thourough inspection, i was pretty sure that TWO brake lines were about 4 " LONGER than the other three.

am -I- looking at it wrong? or is there some red-headed stepchildren of the BlackJack population?

You're looking at it correctly. Move the most inner one 1 rib out and shorten the long ones to match.

Edit: plus, I'd recommend putting the wider slider on it.

what's up with the wider slider? how does it affect the openings?

I have 2 ace/ Perigee pro setups, one with the mod and one without.

Truth be told, I cant tell the difference between the 2 when I'm under canopy. I guess you have to jump a lot more than I do.
