opening shock and problems with video
On my last few jumps my camera stopped recording for a second or two when my canopy opened. I'm using a sony hc5. Anyone experienced this before? Is there anything that can be done to stop it.

That happened to me in norway a few times. Best solution is to roll your nose tighter. Or pull sooner.

Yup, I had some of that on longer delays in moab. Im sure the same thing would happen if you set the camera on the ground while recording and gave it a good kick, head skips off the tape.

good reason to try out memory stick cameras.... no tape, lighter too!

that said, i went from a pc1000 to a cx7. great camera for base in my opinion.

Re: [vinnie1283] opening shock and problems with video
I have the same problem on an HC7. It happens on about 50% of my jumps, depending on how swift the opening is. The actual skipped video can be anywhere from 2-3 frames to as much as 3-4 seconds (it's rare that the lost video is more than a second, though).

It's a real PITA for editing video, because when you use video from a jump where the camera skipped, in the final cut you have to transition to the next scene before the jump's deployment sequence begins. It makes the viewer feel like he's been cheated out of part of the jump. The jumper is still in freefall, and then suddenly the scene starts to fade before the familiar motions of opening shock have even started. I'm planning to pick up a CX12 as a second camera party because of that issue.
