Slider Management
Just curious what the stats are...

Re: [GreenMachine] Slider Management
1 rig is predominantly slider off, the other is mainly slider. In this neck of the woods the season determines if both types of jump are available or just one. Given the option of a second rig I'd never flip flop the slider setting constantly.

one rig
leave on

i remove it when it's not in use. maybe it has something to do with my ocd. maybe not. maybe fuck myself!

if you leave your slider on, and your other riser pops off, slider helps a little bit to keep the canopy together....am i wrong ?! :)

Re: [fastpete] Slider Management
I too was told of the "cross-connector"
value of a slider in the event a riser
gets disconnect or breaks.

Really that reason seems the only good
one TO ME for leaving it on...

Here in Florida almost everything is low
so sliders are not frequently used hence
I leave mine off except for Bridge Day
or when someone has an elevator.

I prefer clean, neat, and organized but
have been called anal-retentive & OCD.Blush

Re: [fastpete] Slider Management
I keep mine on. In worst case deployment(on your back/side with some rotational momentum) the slider should keep you from "splitting" the risers with your body.Everyone has the chance of slipping on exit, so to me it's cheap insurance.

easier yet. do a good gear check and don't jump crappy old gear. haven't had a riser pop off yet. nor has anyone i know. has anyone here had a riser pop and be saved by a slider? chime in please.

i just believe you get a cleaner pack job and a smoother exit from the tray.

I have seen two, one from the video and one in live...So, it do happen thou :)

What was the cause of the riser failures you have witnessed?
Shortcut
Re: [fastpete] Slider Management
Yeah dude, I am curious also:
did the 3 ring come un-done or
did the riser webbing itself break?

Re: [GreenMachine] Slider Management
I know of one chap, where the white loop snapped... Its thought that there was a small snag on the cable....

Re: [GreenMachine] Slider Management
I think the slider should -almost- always be taken off for un-reefed jumps. I think the pros outweigh the cons by fair margin.

reasons;
-decreases the moment arm for a suspended object (jumper) for the purpose of line twist resistance.

-the flopping useless slider could catch on a toggle and cause it to release inadvertently. (my theory on my misfire, with old vertigo psycho easy grab short metal pin toggles)

-packing slider off feels so much nicer and cleaner than slider down. looks cleaner. less pack volume. (sure it does not seem like much, but 20cm^3. adds up)

-canopy flies better, gives canopy negligible more projected surface area, slightly decreases parasite drag with it taken off.

-better visibility, in all cases, with slider off.

-modern BASE risers do not break. I personally do not use a cutaway system on my gear 90% of the time. only on jumps with possible moving water landings. I think anyone honestly worrying about a riser breaking or consciously relying on a slider to keep both halves of their canopy flying in event of a riser break or release needs new risers or a better pre-flight checklist.

-when re-configuring for slider up or slider off, OR slider up or slider down, a full check of everything should be done anyway, negating the added risk of mis-rigging.

Re: [Calvin19] Slider Management
i don't like messing with my links, so slider stays on.

ever been to BD?
many people have jumped another bridge (although officials worked hard to stop it this year). no one would think that it is a SU object.

then these jumpers need to re-configure for BD. the party atmosphere, the excitement, the alcohol, limited packing space, etc. can complicate rigging. (additional eyes can help.)

technically, removing/adding the slider SHOULD be a relatively easy task. it may not be as easy as changing a pc, which gets screwed up!

we all get to make our own decisions. we all get to determine which risks we prefer to minimize.

Re: [wwarped] Slider Management
I agree we all make our own decisions. and if getting retarded drunk and inebriated on anything while BASE jumping no matter how safe an environment while in front of the worlds eyes at the only mass ambassador to NP of an event for the sport of BASE are the decisions you want to make, then cool. leave your slider on for that low bridge.Tongue I leave mine on from time to time, if its one or two quick slider down flicks before going back to worthwhile huge BASE jumps I leave it on.
If I was jumping the P while on the BD trip, I would leave it on. Angelic
I'm just talking in general. the pros and over-emphasized cons to taking it off for a low jump binge.

both snapped their white loop...
other guy thought afterwards that he might had drag his rig on the cement when putting his lines to tailpocket......
BUT also, he`s loop was pretty long so in the opening sequence when the raiser makes 90 degree very fast turn, one of the the three rings can slip to the other side of the ring, soooo, then the whole weight of the opening goes on the loop, not the rings, and SNAP !!!

just my thinking...no more no less :)

Kinda the same thing.... in this area most of my jumps are slider down (off). I've done a total of 5 slider up jumps in my life and it takes perhaps 2 minutes to put the damn thing on.

My only reason is that I just hate it flopping up there. I even hate it in skydiving and that why I have removable for the airplane jumping. Keep is safe and simple.

those both are slider up jumps.. :)
I´m scared of rigging error also...so slider will stay on...

Is named Jeff Dunham, very funny guy!!

Back to BASE, yeah, I heard some guys
lock-off their 3 rings to prevent accidental
disconnects, me I just got a rig with the
integrated risers (sewn into the harness).

Re: [GreenMachine] that comic
On Sunday, while I was hanging 30ft up in a tree, I was very thankful that I sold my container with integrated risers. Cuz otherwise I would have to be hanging on with my left leg wrapped around the trunk, while trying to cut the risers/slinks with a hook knife that I did not bring with me. oooopsie... perhaps 3rings are a good option ?

October 16th had my first tree landing
EVER, from a jump off of a 300 foot
antenna, so I climbed out of the
harness, slid down the branchless
tree and then cut the fucker down.

Email me and I will send you the

Oh I am always good for a laugh.

I landed down wind on my 7th and
what I thought would be my last

stood up, took and said 'Uncle' Laugh

Maybe I will upload to bj.com for
all to enjoy...

One major con, a con that to me has more weight than your "pros" - is the rigging error likelihood taking apart a rig often. You are a pilot - isn't there some statistic that shows aircraft incidents are more likely immediately following repair and/or linked to a specific repair months/years later. Parachutes are much simpler, so most errors would be found on the next jump. ;-)

I know BASE jumpers are pretty good riggers, but still... Mistakes happen.

I could see taking it off if I was only going to put it on once a year for Bridge Day or a Europe trip...

When assembling a reserve or BASE canopy, I really like to hang the canopy for a full inspection when doing any work with lines.

Now, sliders dislodging toggles is a concern for me, so I have worked hard to eliminate that possibility.

I submitted it to BJ but I guess
they have been too must with

Then again, can't a moderator
