for those of you new to the sport and aspiring jumpers, how hell bent on getting your BASE # are you?

how much are you willing to spend to get it?

would you pay for it if it was included in your FJC?

Not a single penny :) I won't apply for the number when I close all 4 letters as I can jump great without it.

Where would the fun and stories about gaining your number by yourself be if you paid someone to give you the ride to get one.... ??

813 is priceless to me because of the memories it gives me when I see it in everyday life...... getting it done "quick" and for payment would be such a waste.......

I will definitely apply for one eventually
but like the other guys said part of the
value comes from earning it.

don't get me wrong, i agree with most of what all of you are saying. i am just curious as to how many people are really eager in obtaining some kind of "status symbol" such as a BASE number. i like having a BASE number, but it was not all about getting the number before i got it. i was just happy to jump anything, anywhere... and for the most part, still am. but of course, having the number does not translate what-so-ever to skill-set.

but as far as stories and memories, i don't think it would be much different either way. you still have to make the jumps and you will still meet some people along the way regardless of how you accomplish it.

i know at least a few people who got their # in the first weekend they started BASE jumping... one who got it in 4 jumps and never made another jump. still some great times and great stories.

also, think about this. who are you more likely to take out to one of "your" more special jumps.

a. a newbie with 5-10 jumps from the perrine after the average FJC

or

b. a newbie with 10-25 jumps from at least 4 or 5 objects

of course, maybe not either... but you get the point.

again, just stirring the pot!

I just got mine just to have it but I would not give up all the climbs up and down and broken bones ......well I would give those back.......... and the arrests with no convictions and the friends I have made, all the places I have jumped(Blue mountains the best) for anything.

not much to me. ive had BASE for a while now but never felt like getting a #.

a # doesnt really mean shit nor will it make a solid base jumper. jumping many different objects, and jumping often does though.

someone could get pca'd off all 4 objects and get a base # with 4 jumps total. doesnt mean he/she knows shit about BASE jumping though.

just my opinion.

BASE number
USPA license
driver's license
pilot certificate
high school/college diploma
etc.

very few earn any of these while actually being good. they are just good enough. the real learning begins after reaching the goal.

BASE has one major difference... rushing to get your number will likely increase the amount of risk a jumper accepts. that means they are more likely to suffer an incident.

I don't base jump yet but even i think your questions are stupid. Like everyone tells you do some research. You can learn a lot about it on your own. People will respect you much more and be happier to help you out when you put forth some effort. Try even helping them out.

By your mentality everyone should learn everything by themselves...

Think for example in skydiving, I came to DZ (being a newbie), they gave me a rig and told me to figure everything else myself...

that parachutist earn licenses and they
are in numerical order.

Same with some BASE jumpers who earn

base jumping and skydiving are 2 different sports. You don't just go up to a base jumper pay him a bunch of money and expect him to teach you everything you need to know. Yes you can learn a lot from a fjc (first jump course in case you haven't figured out what that means) but base jumpers will tell you there is a lot more to learn after that. No one will want to help you if they don't like, trust, or respect you. Do what it takes to earn those.

I know about the skydiving licenses...

I'll try to find a good link to show you how it originated. NickDG made a good post a while back. The search function on this site pretty much sucks but I'll try to find it.

Joy and Rick Harrison are the keepers of the BASE number book. You jump and document each of those objects, send them a story and you get a hand written letter back plus a card with a number on it. It's kinda cool.

I got mine months and months after I'd jumped all 4 types. I wasn't going to get one then figured why not! My number is about 75 or so higher than my friend who quailfied the same day. He sent in for it right away, it took me a while to care but I like having the card. It reminds me of how challenging it was sometimes getting into the buildings. Fun times.

PS: BASE number isn't a license. If you choose to get one, It's simply a card and a name in a book to document a personal achievement

its all a facade...just bragging rights in the end.I guess one time it may have been special but now pointless really its not that special your little number thats not even accurate considering how many jumpers do not have a little card with a number.Yes we should remember the past and respect what many have done but that for sure does not happen by getting a BASE number.Considering the slander among BASE jumpers and posing the little number club is not that cool to be a part of really...yes i know that not all are like that.BASE really is not that hard to do....longevity is hard...much respect to all those who been playing hard over the years and have seen the best and the worst and keep playing the game with passion!

what I see is someone who either chooses not to read, or does not truely understand what they DO read. either is scary if you wish to get into BASE. your reliance on others can get you killed. and that is NO joke.

Dude I have had friends who almost knew what "BASE" was an acronym for. They have never skydived or BASE jumped. One almost got it except they switched B for Bridges and S for Structure. Not bad for a whoffo, but my friend isn't a moron.

So, I'm interested in this jumping off stuff but I have some questions after watching some videos. Are those backpacks the same ones you can buy at Target or Walmart? I keep seeing people reach back and pull a small thing out and then a big thing comes out. What is the small thing, big thing, and when they reach back how are they unzipping the backpack for the small thing and big thing to come out? I've got plenty more questions but figured I would start here ...
