Raven 111
I am new to base jumping but have 11 years and 1500 skydives...I have a Raven 111 I plan on putting into a new badseed base container....from what i have read about using a raven for base is the bridal attachment point and brake line attachments need reinforced other then that besides a cliff strike that a vent would help with they work as good as any.
Can i have some input on my decisions?

Re: [TreeRat] Raven 111
You will also need a tail-pocket installed. You will have to get a mesh slider made for it. I have about 200 jumps on my Raven III and it has been very good to me. It has very few off heading openings (my body position rocks) Wink and it comes open fast. The down side is that it flies fast when it opens. Not so good it you are heading to the side of a building or cliff. You might want to have a deep break setting installed as well. I would think about forking out the cash for a BASE canopy asap but the Raven will work for selected objects just fine.

oh! a raven III not 111... i was wondering how he was going to fit a northrup grumman jet into a BASE container.

Isn't a Raven III 218 square feet?

So you'd need to weigh around 160.

Re: [GreenMachine] Raven 111
It's a 243 i belive

Re: [GreenMachine] Raven 111
A raven II is 218 but the raven III is 249. Back in the day there wern't a whole lot of choices for BASE specific canopies and my funds were low. My raven actually opens better than my old MOJO. My mojo's end cells never from day one fully inflate on opening. That also poses a problem when heading towards the object. My blackjack opens, flies and lands like a dream.

Pauly

Re: [pauly632] Raven 111
Thanks for the specs Pauly632 & Blitkrieg.

So you like your Raven better than your Mojo?

Hmm, I have packed and jumped with a
Raven on my back but never flown one.

I did own and jump a Mojo 280 for 7 jumps.
Of course it was my first 7 jumps hence I was
so scared I could not tell you much about how
it opened other than what I thought then was
very Hard. SmileBlush

Re: [GreenMachine] Raven 111
lets not forget that Precision measure the Raven differently than PIA thus the Raven III is more like a 225. which may account for the faster speed :)

Re: [GreenMachine] Raven 111
My mojo 280 is great for terminal stuff and bridges but it just never gets off its ass to get totally pressurized . I have seen other Mojo's that open great. It's DOM is 10/2000. I sent it back but they said it was in trim and nothing wrong with the cross ports. I like the solid opening on the raven but now that I am fat I can not jump it any more. I have jumped all objects with the raven but would not recommend that to anyone. Moab was scary with it, but fun....

True that.

I have seen people saying the brakes on a raven needs set deeper has anyone done this and how deep did you goUnsure

Re: [TreeRat] Raven 111
I went a just a bit before it stalls. But that has to be determined by how you load it.

Re: [vid666] Raven 111
PIA says the Raven III is 241 sq. ft. (at least according to this chart).

how much do ya weigh?

Re: [TreeRat] Raven 111
The last time I saw a Raven III it was hanging halfway down the frozen pizza cliff. It was pilot error though. Some of the prettiest openings I have ever seen were Ravens fer sure. When making turns, they can be a bit ground hungry. Fact.

see this thread. I stated:

I wrote:
personal preference, typical jump objects, altitude, experience, gear, etc. all influence what your "proper" brake settings.

your brake settings determine how your parachute will fly on opening.

how your canopy flies determines which input you should use (2 toggles, 4 risers, provides at least 15 options).

people will give advice, but unless they have seen your canopy fly, it might not be accurate.

theory ought to be confirmed, tested, and gear tweaked off of a "safe" object. that let's you really understand your equipment. canopy drills from an airplane can also let you know your parachute better.

BASE has many variables... only you know your comfort zone.

and the chart that I have from 2007 PIA rev (TS-104.16) shows different areas for different years. Ranges are 232-247 for the RavenIII from 85-94 :) and yes the value for the DOM 03/87 is shown as 241sq ft

I was saying like a 225 because that's a common BASE canopy size , and it's always better to err on the side of caution:)

Re: [TreeRat] Raven 111
No worries about DBS with a good tailwind off an antenna, plus the exercise will help you with your wing loading. Don't worry about reinforcing anything, you will now if it failsSly I am sure you can borrow the velro container you used before, if you want to make a jump this weekend.

please note, that unlike the chart suggests, putting spectra lines on the Raven3 does not make the area go up 10 times.

What happens is Precision measures the span measurement from stabilizer to stabilizer which accounts for the differences between their measurements and PIA. The biggest difference is with the Raven IV at 266/282. A bit misleading. They open and fly great till they have about 500 jumps on them. Then they get pretty swoopy.

I *believe* (someone please confirm) that theeasy way to tell apart between SUPER and regular ravens is the Model - Regular (older) Ravens have the 1/2/3/4 on the label, while newer ones have the I/II/III/IV on the label. Of course when somebody put a tailpocket right over the label it becomes a bit harder to check :)

Re: [vid666] Raven 111
I tend to look at the construction of parachutes. Being rigger. I would amend my above post to say that a lot of regular Ravens have been modified in this way. Just be sure it is there (reinforcement).
Take care,
