What's your opinion?
I was wondering anyone’s current opinion on how soon is too soon to BASE. I got my friend in to skydiving and now with 25ish jumps under his belt and no license he feels he is ready to move on to BASE and possible wingsuits. He’s not super talented dude or terrible by any means just your average jumper with his numbers.

I’m not one to tell another grown man how to live his life, but I was curious if you knew then what you know now, or if you were him what would you do?

Don't worry too much. If he shows up anywhere trying to get advice to kill himself like a retard, he can get throat punched. It's called "self-regulation."

Problem solved.

Depends what he means by ready to move onto BASE / wingsuits. No problem with thinking about it, breaking down his objective into achievable steps that take a few years, but he's not ready to do. It took me 10 yrs of thinking about wingsuit BASE to actually doing it - although it took me 5 years to get around to skydiving!

Most people, when they start looking into it properly, begin to realise what is actually involved. That may well be enough.

0 - wingsuit BASE should take at least 3 years IMHO.

he should talk to "travisjones" http://www.basejumper.com/...rum.cgi?post=2892702

That guy can probably outfit him with a wingsuit and a rig as well.

Most FJC's require a minimum of 150 skydives before they'll throw you off of something and DZ's are generally at the 200 jumps before they'll let you take out a WS.

i'd have fun making tons of skydives to gain canopy flight/control and tracking skills. both of which are essential whether he ever enters BASE or not. the objects aren't going anywhere. in fact there's more going up all he time.

hmmm... I know more than a few BASE jumpers that have less than 40 skydives.

I really, REALLY think it should be a case my case basis. I think that paraglider pilots, speed flying pilots, ski jumpers, even pro big mountain skiers, should be considered as more qualified than some.

numbered requirements bring an unfair fairness to new jumpers getting into the sport.

the basic feeling of a parachute coming off you back and flying a canopy to landing is very unique. skydiving could possibly be skipped, but I would not recommend it.

as I have said before, I think that the fair majority of being a good, safe base Jumper is not just muscle memory and knoledge, but basic high angle/aerodynamic/free fall natural abilities. some people have it before BASE jumping, some people find it after starting BASE, others never find it.

I agree. Pretty much what everybody is saying or will likely say is, with 25 jumps finding someone to take him on and show him the ropes is pretty slim. If he goes it alone and burns an object, he could be looking forward to a blanket party.

true, you'll need those skills every jump. but there is something else skydiving teaches...

how will a jumper react during a time-critical malfunction?
can they even function?
I think skydiving remains the best venue to learn this lesson.

muscle memory comes in real handy!

Before 500 jumps with some classic accuracy practice. That should give you enough time in the sport to see how people break themselves, get you into some bad situations that stress the importance of judgement, and show you that you still don't know that much.

Re: [DrewEckhardt] What's your opinion?
well heres my 2 cents. ive got 150 skydives and 22 BASE jumps. initially it was why i started skydiving, but it was a long process of finding information and watching all those videos. finally took my FJC and went on an epic trip for a first timer.

the initial fire has been kinda burnt. i am no longer in a rush to go jump off fixed objects. dont get me wrong, ive never dreamt about anything in my sleep like i have BASE (except for those donkey shows in TJ), but priorities have been switched around for me. my main objective now is to solidify my career, and get a FUCKLOAD more skydive experience. BASE aint going nowhere, and when im good and ready i will dedicate myself to my pursuit.

i can barely take care of myself right now, let alone travel the world to jump big cliffs. things will happen when they are meant to happen.

Tell us a little more about your friend...

Is he a pilot?
Or is he a ninja?
Does he own a bar?
Does she have big tits?

We need more information!

Secret told us he was not a jedi, so that means he probably does not have the mojo.
