leaving things on an A.
i know there are some tower workers that are also BASE jumpers, how bad is it that I abandoned some rigging equipment on an A? It is retrievable, but would take several hours.

also, there is a chance it will not be noticed. it is kinda out of site unless you are looking for it.

the equipment is high grape polyester rescue slings, steel carabiners, and a steel rescue pulley.

i am sure the vegas guys will chime in here soon, but that happened already, and fantastic A was turned into Alcatraz after that.. please take the time to get that off if at all possible.

most tower workers would be extremely puzzled as to why anyone would leave such good fall arrest equipment on a tower to be exposed to the elements. i would remove it if i were you.

cool. I plan on retrieving it soon then.

second question, do tower workers use the guy lines for access ever? as in, if this small equipment was 200m up the wire from the anchor and 400 meters from the tower, and cannot see it unless you are looking for it closely, would they ever find it?

ALSO, if they do use the wires for access, how do they do it?

yes, they go up and down the wires, but only very rarely. Some of the really old towers have the guy wires painted and this is the only time I've ever heard of tower wokers on the wires. I think they attach some sort of bucket to the guy wire that is pulleyed from near the guy wire attachment point. most likely they wouldn't notice something like that. are you planning on climbing the wire to get some good footage of jumpers? The pulley system is usually run from some sort of ground based diesel motor or directly from a very large truck.

I have seen the large deadmen anchors for those, and the winch engine not in use.

as for why I was up there, its a long story.

You would be surprised how much rigging is left behind when in a hurry to finish a job, There's a saying in the industry that if you want to build a tower company then just follow one around. Trolleying down the guy cables isn't allowed by OSHA, equipment or people. You have to set up another cable and use a dual drum man-rated winches to lower people. In the old days they would grease cables while riding on a bosen chair but now they use what they call a "Grease Pig", it's a deal that pumps grease through it covering is cable as it's lowered but most owners just have the cables changed unless it's a major broadcast tower and cost is outrageous . They don't use Crosby's (cable clamps) anymore, they use preforms, their like chinese finger cuffs, they just wrap the cable and have glass dust on them the help bite the cable. They put ice clips on the bottom so sliding ice don't smack them a unravel them, I've seen trucks run into the cables and pull them apart but not pull the tower down. I couldn't tell what you had stuck on the cable but I'd try to shake the crap out of it a hope it slides down. I've had ropes get stuck and knot them self's to the cable while whipping around trying to snap the rope down and just had to leave them.
