Big Boats
Since I don't ever post on any other web page, I thought I'd throw this out here...

Anyone here have experience taking care of really big boats? I'm thinking of getting a large boat to live in for pennies on the dollar. It's 45 feet long, 16 feet wide, 3 stories high, with a house built into it, twin diesel motors, decked out with every accessory known to man. My only concern is having to refuel the sucker. It has a 400 gallon diesel tank.

Cost of Mooring and then the cost of route maintenance is the biggest items I think. Best thing to do is talk with someone who is already doing your idea and get the in's and out's of the total water living commitment. (IMHO) After you get the idea of the commitment of time and money to maintaining two diesel engines in a marine environment plus the rest of your investment that is floating that you live in. 400 gallons of fuel. @ say, 3-$ a gal. is 1200-$ for example is not your biggest worries.
Boats are not cheep to maintain and the cost of fuel will be second to mooring fees and upkeep. Dry-dock fees for repairs go hand in hand in the maintenance also. Unless your plan is to put the boat in dry-dock (private property) "while living on it'. to avoid Mooring. Diesel are long life and Torque monsters but parts are spendy.Twin screw diesels are the shit though. Dry-dock for repairs go hand in hand in some major repair/maintenance also because some things have to be done out of water. I have heard it said that a boat is just a hole in water where you throw all your Money-$$$.

"I can get it for pennies on the dollar!"

Sorry, rolling on the floor laughing. There are a lot of boats that you'd be fucked on if they gave it to you for free. then again it all depends on what you're planning. If you just want a place to crash and it's not sinking too fast for the bilge pump to keep up with then you could have a cheep appartment. Boats generaly sell for about what they are worth. And people generaly beggen by over vallueing them. Get a good survay. I doubt it's that great a deal in the traditional sence.

I don't know exactly what your looking at but I just bought a 37ft Endeavor for $21,000 with no major problems. Survayed the same day for $35,000. It's a nice wide open floor plan. A perfect live aboard. Now when you step up to 40+ things get more pricey. Even then you'll see some boats, say an old concreat schooner, go really cheap. Don't give up. Right now is a good time to look around Christmas and taxes and all that. I saw some really good deals last year. Ike took out a lot of boats but there are opertunities there too. Say a boat that took on some water and the engion is dead. There are boats out there that were totaled, or uninsured, or they got the payoff but don't want to put the money back into a boat that they weren't useing any way. They would rather sell it off cheep and keep all the money.
If you're serious let me know and we will try and find you a boat.

you can buy a boat cheap if the engine is dead, because the diesel or marine gas engine is expansive also if the engine can be chev,350 or ford 351 if the In/out driver is no good you are looking at 5,000 to 15,000 for new or use part, make sure have surevay on the engine too.right now because of the economy there is Lot of people trying to get rid of there boat so it is the best time ever to buy
