General BASE

security police force
After a recent jump off a local E, four of us had a bit of a run in with the local cops. Luckily everyone walked always with nothing worse than achy vaginas.

I had the pleasure of receiving a 45 minutes tour of the back of the cop car, with them occasionally opening the door and accosting me with lines like "Do you want this to be serious, or REALLY serious?" and "Just man up, son, just man up and you can go home and tell everyone about how you got a ticket for BASE jumping" as well as threatening me with jail time and search warrants.

Some gear was partially visible (L-bracket of camera helmet sticking out of a stash bag) in the back of the car, and we were hanging at the car exchange about a mile from the exit point. Our assumption was that after a speedy getaway from the landing area, we were in the clear. Luckily, when the cops arrived no one admitted anything (although it was written all over our faces), the cars were locked, and no one had anything on their person.

Lesson's learned-
1) It's not over until you are home. Don't get complacent.
2) Know your rights, because the cops sure as hell won't respect them.
3) Never admit anything, but don't lie either.

I discussed the matter extensively with a lawyer friend of mine, who wrote up a bit of a guideline for future dealings with officers of the law. Thought I'd share it with you all.

Re: [dantana] security police force
Don't use the word "sir." Use the word "officer." It is not as bootlicking and it reminds them of their professional obligations and their police academy training. Secondly, you are most likely being recorded at all times. They even wear microphones on them without your knowledge.

Re: [460] security police force
I was a cop for 5 years...we prefer Sir. Especially since a significant fraction of cops are former military or current reserves/guard.

Respect will get you everywhere. Officer comes across as sarcastic and patronizing because it's used as an insult in the hood.

And when you tell them "no" to a consentual search, smile. Sounds silly, but they'll know you have them by the balls and might just walk away. - I have when I knew I wasn't gonna pull one over on an educated subject.

But remember...technically you can be taken into custody for speeding simply to justify a search incidental to arrest, so when you go denying a search...make sure ALL your shit is in order. Headlights, insurance, registration, etc.

The most law-abiding, vehicle-maintaining, bill-paying people I came across where the BIGTIME dope dealers. Because they knew if they eliminated any PC, we were screwed.

Glad things worked out for you guys!

I read your Word document, thanks.
It was information I have heard and
read many times but being reminded
of our rights is important.

My Dad taught me long ago that when
you deal with a cop it is always good to
remember there is No Winning, only
degrees of Loss, so be polite it helps.

It might depend on the part of the country you are in.

Where I grew up "sir" came across as patronizing, because no one used it, ever, except in a mocking way. My wife still has trouble believing that, because it was totally normal for you to call anyone older than you "sir" where she grew up.

in my limited experience using "just chilling" as the answer to most of the probing questions works well too. results may vary.

Re: [dantana] security police force
Sir, under the advice of my attorney, I respectfully request that legal counsel be present during any and all questioning and interrogation from this point forward by yourself or any other member of law enforcement.

No sir, I respectfully request that you do not search my vehicle/house/belongings/person as my attorney has advised me that my 4th amendment rights forbade this without a proper warrant or cause.

Memorize these two lines and use them liberally.

It will piss the cops off sometimes but who the fuck cares they are not there to be your buddy...they are there to fuck with you so no use trying to be their friend.

Yeah, my ex-wife played F* the police really loud, and ended up in handcuffs for no apparent reason. In fact, Chris Rock has done a documentary on such incidences called "how not to get you arse kicked by the police." It's here:

I didn’t see “run away” on the list; when caught in the act this technique should be exercised promptly at initial confrontation with the authorities for best results.

Re: [fastphil] security police force
Silly Phil...if you are "running away" then you are not caught...

Re: [1108] security police force
Silly me... but I have been on the caught end too and learned a lesson. I do know that the operation of a motordrive camera during the confrontational period will accelerate the significance of the engagement.

I would like to add that "just hanging out" works well too. Now tested in 2 different states.
