Morning Report
On October 7th, a BASE jumper and his partner pled guilty to separate charges in federal court following their arrest after a BASE jump a week earlier. Andrew Gromek pled guilty to a violation of 36 CFR 2.17(a)(3), illegal delivery of a person by parachute, the regulation prohibiting BASE jumping. Gromek was ordered to pay $2,000 in fines. Tracey Hodson, Gromek’s partner, who aided and abetted him by acting as a radio lookout and posing as a hiking partner, pled guilty to interference with an agency function and was ordered to pay a $250 fine. Despite the duo’s extraordinary efforts to avoid detection, including surveillance of the ranger station, scouting the jump location the previous day, using two-way radios, leaving for the jump site under darkness, and completing a backcountry permit stating they were hiking together, ranger Mark Franklin was still able to outwit the two and observe Gromek BASE jump off the 2,250-foot-high Painted Wall, Colorado’s highest cliff, early on the morning of October 1st. Later that morning, rangers contacted a bewildered Gromek and Hodson as they exited S.O.B Draw and confiscated all the equipment used in the jump. Gromek had attempted to hide all of the equipment and other evidence of the jump in nearby trees prior to leaving the area.

There's at least a degree of rot to be found anywhere in the world, whether aimed at BASE jumpers or not... I think the statement still stands.

In reply to:
ranger Mark Franklin was still able to outwit the two

Makes you picture school kids sitting around and giggling.

In reply to:

Really? So it now says "BASE jumping" in the text of this statute?

It wouldn't help on this wall. The entire jump, from exit to landing, is visible from the tourist overlook on the opposite side of the canyon. That overlook also has permanent ranger staffing during business hours, in season. I'm not sure when in the year that ends, but anytime you jump this exit point during those hours, you're pretty much guaranteed to be seen by someone (usually a tourist) who may or may not ask the ranger on duty 20 yards away about it.

ya know...to deliver something...dont you have to be outside of the destination for it to be 'delivered'? the provision obviously originally targeted people dropping in from planes...and i know this has been brought up a million times before...but a good fucking lawyer can fix this

Pressure and time. that's all anything needs to break. Pressure, and time.

the cost of a bust is 2000-10,000 USD, ($) the cost of fighting a bust, to the supreme court is maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars with zero monetary gain no matter what.

you go nuts my main man, but I like spending my money on gear and travel.

Re: [milkflyrockclimb] Morning Report
well apparently the lawyers did well on the first round and lost the appeal. not quite the supreme court but the 10 circuit court of appeals. jump was in 95' , court in 96-97.

it is obvious your not the answer to our prayers, google is your friend.

The issue was almost taken to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Fred Morelli was the key lawyer for the jumpers. The primary defendents were Dennis McGlynn and Mark Albers, in separate cases. Fred actually made a jump at Bridge Day several years ago.
