quick question.......
after removing my slider, my slider bumpers are loose on my lines, they are not tightly on top of my links. may this cause a potential problem such as hindering the opening if those fuckers end up sliding all the way up the lines?
anyone experienced this?
thanks

Re: [UberChris] quick question.......
ALWAYS tie the bumpers to the links, any rigger worth their salt can help you with this. And yes, loosy goosy bumpers flowing up your lines would be bad.

Re: [UberChris] quick question.......
what?

I have never tied down bumpers. mine are so tight, and I use the 1" clear tube, not the sketchy foggy tight as shit stretchy tube.

they are LOOSE? get smaller tube. tieing them down will work for now i guess, but seriously, get tighter tube. I have a 10' roll of it. never replaced it on all 4 risers.

Re: [Calvin19] quick question.......
ya dude, i've worked with a rigger on this one. all the tandems at my dropzone have the bumpers tied down so they dont slide up during the deployment. basically you punch a hole through the middle of the bumpers, run line through the bumper and tie it down with a riggers knot. that'll keep the bumpers tied down so they dont slide up on you, because if they do, you can kiss your opening good bye. but obviously dont take my word for it, ask a rigger, they should at least know what you're talking about.

the only thing is you're slider is either gonna have to stay on or off, unless you're ready to redo the whole process every time you want to take the slider on/off.

well thank you for the replies, my feeling was that they definitely could pose a serious problem. i have to get some bumpers that arent so tight though, because they are a BITCH and im not exaggerating to put over my links. i hear you on the tying the bumpers down thing as well. thanks

no, don't replace them. if they're loose on your lines but tight on the links, that's good. just lube the link (use saliva) and push the bumpers down onto the links. they should be super tight, that way they don't slide up on their own.

Re: [JamMasterJay] quick question.......
Or just eliminate all the french link and bumper problems with slinks. Except then you don't have anything to tie down.
Shortcut
Re: [JamMasterJay] quick question.......
tying the bumpers down on a BASE rig is usually wasteful. Most of us keep taking slider off or switching small/large mesh. I have never seen bumpers that are too big for #5 rapides. Of course you may be using #3.5 in which case I recommend you switch.

also, using a hair dryer to warm 'em up and shrink them a bit is an easy household trick.

slinks are a pain in the ass if you keep fucking with removing the slider.

hairdryer might ease the pain. mahalo

The hole will make slider changes more difficult than they need to be and it can tear on soft silicone bumpers. Skip it.

Push the bumper down so that the riser end is a little below the top of the french link and line ends. Run a piece of super tack around the bumper, passing through the french link at the bottom and between the lines at the top (2 on each side or 2 and 3). Tie with a surgeon's knot and over-hand knot in the opposite direction.

With my method (probably learned from Jimmy and Marta) it's not an issue. With the bumpers pulled as far up as they go on the french links it's a little tight but you can still still squeeze everything through the slider grommets when using standard #5 links.

You might want to thread the steering lines through the slider grommet first on removal and after getting the links through on installation.

Bumpers, Links & Slinks
Yes, it is common for rigger's to tack down
the bumpers on reserve canopies but as it
has already been mentioned this would be
a PITA for BASE.

You can get poly-vinyl tubing from Lowes
or any hardware store for 20 cents a foot,
which would be good for a couple rigs.

The stock bumpers on my Gargoyle were
tight and a pain so I just cut them off...

I am a slider on or slider off kind of guy
plus I rarely do slider jumps so for me it
much easier just to not have any at all.

As for SLINKS, is there anyone out there
with experience using them in the BASE
environment? Cuz I have thought about
using some tandem slinks...

I used to use tandem slinks,i had direct /integrity risers,so if i needed to cut myself out the trees,i could just simply cut them.Saves hacking at risersPirate

I have slider bumpers on my BASE rigs and remove my slider completely for low jumps. It might add 30 seconds to installing or removing the slider.

do you tack the bumpers down every time too ? Cuz I find it hard to keep using the same holes - thus the bumpers would be swiss cheese after a few times. I believe the Green One means that tacking them down every time would be a major PITA.

Re: [GreenMachine] Bumpers, Links & Slinks
Been using Slinks (tandem) since day one with no issues. I keep my slider on so its not as much of a pain if I need it.

Re: [freeflychris] Slinks

I have integrated risers on my BASE rig
and recently had my first tree landing
so having tandem slinks might be nice.

I just climbed out of the harness, but that
might not always be an option given the
situation/injuries, etc.

I leave them tacked down. As noted in my original post it's trivial to use a piece of super tack which keeps the bumpers from migrating up the lines but doesn't prevent slider removal.

You don't need any holes in the bumpers when you're only trying to keep the bumpers at the links and aren't worried about improperly tightened french links coming open.

ok, I gotcha. I just always think that "tacked" involves punching holes.

I have a few hundred jumps on reserve/tandem slinks.

For most people, the way they treat their gear and their level of gear knowlegde makes these an inferior option to rapide links.

Rapide links with soft silicone bumpers are also way better handholds for doing front riser turns if you are into BASE swooping.

The short answer is they will work fine, but there are caveats you need to be aware of if you want them to keep working fine.

can you explain more in detail.

of few hundred jump how many is slider down and how many is up, how often do you change the slink ?,
