Google Earth users
I had a guy whip up a .kmz file from lat/long coordinates of every tower in the FCC database. This one is just for Michigan but can be done for any area.

What do you guys think?

Added:
Placemark name is the tower height in feet.
Placemark description field has registration number and owner and address.
The towers are sorted by height in folders.

Nope. Different guy; same skillz though. I got tired of plunking individual lat/long coords into Google maps so I got a copy of the db file and he coded some stuff and automated the entire process.

It's the same effort to do any (or all) the states; I only did Michigan because I didn't plan on being in any other states at the moment... well, except for WV tomorrow afternoon...

Hey, I don't know what went on while I was gone but since everyone deleted their posts I'm assuming I either stepped over some line or everybody is in on a joke but me...

Anyways, I've got the entire database for the US mapped into Google earth now divided up by state.

If you want a particular state or the whole damn country; PM me.

The ASR database is public knowledge.

All you did is do the legwork to put it on a map. No line crossed. BASE jumpers are paranoid and girly sometimes.

"What?, you mean you just ASKED that dude if you could jump his building?"

"Yeah fuckwit - try it sometime."

Yea, I know that, I'm surprised more of them don't jump in dresses...

I got some flak because this made it too easy for new people to find objects and therefore they would bypass getting proper mentoring and just get their hands on some gear and go huck something. Evidently, if you "earn" your way to finding (or being shown an object) it makes you a better base jumper.

>Whatever<

Anyways, there are a couple of quirks with the files I've noticed; the height labels seem to be a bit off as compared to the equivalent search results. I don't know if we've got a value off on the conversion into feet or not.

The other issue is the FCC's fault; it's not as up to date as it should be. I've been on a kick to search down all the Bell Systems long line towers in this area and I went out to a site I narrowed down only to find that the only thing left was a building and three concrete footings with bolts. The FCC had never labeled it as "Dismantled". Bastards.

You are missing the big picture. It has nothing to do with mentorship. Think about it.

you can try skyvector.com its aeronatical chart for flight paths. it shows A's and there feet. with a little hw you can find the A's location and scope out the landing area, with google earth

I agree with Space, makes it way too easy for new people to burn my stuff I worked hard to establish. Could you leave WA out of the distribution, thanks. For crews where most of their stuff is hush-hush it would jam them up to have some douche waltz in, heat up their stuff and maybe get them pinched because of such charity. Any jumper 'worth their salt' can find stuff on their own as long as they're not lazy.

Re: [tr027] Google Earth users
This is just another tool to use to locate certain objects and just like every other tool available and out there it can be used by dumbasses and the ethically challenged. It's nothing new, it's the same exact information that has been freely available for years. In fact, I don't think that there is anybody out there jumping that hasn't used this data, I just formatted and used it differently. Information wants to be free.

I think this will actually keep people from burning your objects. If I take a trip to WA and all I can see from my hotel room is the blinking red light from that high bust local A and I don't know anybody (or they're not available or they didn't respond to my post on BJ) I'm probably going to go take a chance on hitting it. -but- ...if I am in the same situation, and am armed with a bunch of options, I'm more likely to locate and hit a more secluded, lower bust object.

More information can also save someones life, why let someone jump that sketchy-ass 200' outside climb cell tower with the bad landing area when there might be a super sweet 500' freestander in the middle of nowhere surrounded by open fields right around the corner?

I think in the scheme of things, that random rogue jumper going around and heating things up is pretty super rare. But yea, there is always a chance someone is going to waltz in and burn something though, a douche will always be a douche.

elitism...

i agree, information provides safety. rogues are surely not as common is a sport that is very dangerous like BASE, not to mention expensive and something that makes most people go cross eyed when you talk to them about it. Jumping with little experience is like jumping in in open water off South Africa or South Australia with the great whites.

then again, nobody would mentor me so i taught myself and i am fine. looking for spots is more fun than the jump itself to me.

delete your databases you nerds! go exploring out doors folk! jump when you find something safe, unique and beautiful.

I agree that finding objects is a really
fun and quite rewarding adventure.

Of course some of us grown folks who
have jobs and wives and so on do not
always have the luxury of that much
free time to devote to it.

Hence using online tools and friends to
decrease search time and increase jump
time personally makes sense to me.
