smuggler's rig?
does anyone know of a gear manufacturer that makes a BASE smuggler's rig? (no metal parts)
Just something that crossed my mind this evening, but thought it would be cool to have a rig that'd be easier to get through airports with. Bad memories of trying to fly with a skydiving rig Dec 2001...Damned National guard dude tried REALLY hard to make me open my reserve in florida thinking i was some sort of terrorist!!
I mean, the nylon has been shown to be stronger than metal in most cases...

If TSA @ airports is what you are really worried about, then don't be. I have taken my rigs on 150+ commercial airline flights in the last 3 years with next to no hassles.

My biggest issue was actually at the Twin Falls airport after my 1st BASE weekend...but I am pretty sure I was on the no-fly list at that time.

It took 100 flights until a TSA agent in Philly finally took my Apex hook knife. And then, when they saw that it was an actual safety type knife they were all apologetic and wanted to put it into my checked baggage for me. I declined as either myself or my bags missing the plane over a $5 hook knife was just not happening...stuck in Philly...no fuckin way!!!

Re: [1108] smuggler's rig?
...I have noticed things getting better, but have lost 2 hook knives in the recent past. Like you though, i wasn't going to make a fuss and have baggage get lost.
Really, i was wondering if A.) the all canvas-typ rig is feasable, and B.) if anyone has heard of them being made or used.
The idea came to me after thinking about soft links versus metal ones. Maybe just a silly post.

yes, these have been made.

i would imagine the metal articulated ones would be a lot more comfortable and better for climbing anyway.

I have personally seen a rig that had permanently sewn leg straps to the users size and a chest strap that you knot.

Grommets still existed, so I suppose a velcro rig would even eliminate that.

You would need a ceramic blade hook knife to cut your slinks should you land in a tree.

I would like one, but not for the airport Crazy, for busty B's!
Seems like it'd have to be committed to slider off though (would slider grommets set off a metal detector?) But between no 3-rings, sewn leg straps, and a knot in your chest strap, it could prove difficult to get away from a tangled canopy (before the cops show that is)

What if you replaced all the steel hardware with carbon fiber or some other stronger than steel composite?

You can get nylon gromets and a thick nyon zip tie makes a great pin. I have always wanted to build one for no other reason than just to do it.
