The assistant to my orthopedic surgeon claims Shaquille O'Neil was into BASE jumping for a while before whatever team he was on at the time (I don't know when this was supposed to have happened) found out and put a stop to it.

Anyone know if this is true? Or is the assistant guy confusing some other sport (like bungee)?

 
Sure, just ask the manufacturers if they've made any 400-ish canopies for professional sports players.

Always good to make sure they actually know what base jumping is. I had someone tell me they made a basejump in switzerland...with a guy strapped to their back...out of an airplane.

Yes, the idea of Shaq jumping sounds a bit strange. But when you've got as much money as he does, I think getting custom made gear and hiring a mentor wouldn't be very difficult. Money opens a lot of doors.

Uh... the assistant is a middle/elder-aged dude who used to be in the Black Panthers. So no, I have no interest in his number.

He knew enough about BASE that when I said I jumped off a bridge and broke my ankle, he said "oh you're a BASE jumper, you jump off of buildings and cliffs and stuff, right?" So when he insisted that Shaq had jumped, I didn't feel like arguing and thought I'd ask here.

true. i had someone ask me if "free basing" was fun. i promptly told them that i didn't participate in that particular sport. i had to explain the difference...one uses a parachute while the other used aluminum foil, straw, lighter and crank! maybe O'Neil was into the latter.
