Low Altitude Jumping
Hello all,
My name is Tim and I am very new to the world of BASE jumping. I have been reading on the subject and have just completed my first skydiving jump this past week. Nearly everything I've come across that had to do with BASE jumping was concerned with jumping off of objects that were in excess of 250 feet high. I am interested in whether it is possible with the available equipment at hand to complete a jump that is equivalent to maybe 4 to 10 stories high. If so, what equipment would be recommended? If not, what is the lowest possible altitude to make a jump from and what equipment would be recommended for that? I realize these might be stupid questions and I apologize, but thank you for your help anyway.

Welcome to the exciting world of jumping!
Please stick to skydiving for a long time. Smile

As for your questions - 4 to 10 story building
would be somewhere between 40 and 100 feet
which is not really high enough to BASE jump.

It might be possibly done by very experienced
guys but neither you nor me qualify.

The lowest BASE jumps, well a 95 foot statue
has been jumped, low bridges over water have
been done, etc. but again please do not get
any crazy ideas, okay Tim Wink

Re: [tdrake32] Low Altitude Jumping
yeah, you can jump all day long from 4-10 stories into a swimming pool. just put one directly below where you're going to jump from. if all goes well, you'll land right in it. if you only jump from the second story you may not even need to bring a swimming pool. you could just land on your feet.

The jump isn't until 3:32, but here ya go...It's called a D-Bag.

Welcome!

Fair questions and politely asked, so I'll answer you before somebody tells you "Sure, just use a bedsheet and make sure you get video. What could possibly go wrong?"

As you have been told, there is lots of skydiving in your future before you want to try BASE. The more you learn as you skydive, you may even decide to stick with skydiving and never to BASE jump. Get enough skydives to make an educated decision. Most skydivers decide NOT to BASE jump.

As to your questions, I can't help but say that if I were to make a 10 story jump, the most important equipment on hand would be an ambulance. Wink Even if the landing turned out okay, I think the heart attack at the exit point would require medical attention. That's pretty low even direct bagging it unless you are over water and know what you are doing.

Best of luck with your skydiving!

Thank you all for your answers. Now that I know that it is a definite no, do you think it would be possible to perhaps find or constuct some sort of parachute to adapt to that low of an altitude? Maybe shortening the lines and making the parachute smaller? I guess I am puzzled as to why this cannot work. Hopefully you all have some answers. Thanks again.

Why exactly do you want to jump from 40-100ft?

If you're looking to do some low tree jumps, allow me to recommend the BASE-T. Tongue [/kidding]

Yes, it's possible. The lowest jump I know of was 46 feet over hard ground, but the rigging was quite ridiculous.

At that point, you're best off just learning to ground launch, and kiting the canopy. If you can do that, you can make "BASE jumps" from 10 feet, if you like.

Mostly what Tom said. " Yes, it's possible. The lowest jump I know of was 46 feet over hard ground, but the rigging was quite ridiculous."
10 feet (3m) was the lowest I've seen on video. Freefall. But that is not really a BASE jump. Contact me and I will set you up with the Bavarian who did this. A lot of hard work went into this so don't believe that you can do it without the research and hard work.
Your call.

Re: [base283] Low Altitude Jumping
Can someone please give me more info regarding D-Bag jumps. I have read alot about super low jumps being done with this method. In my FJC we did not cover this and where I stay we are only a few jumping with no such knowledge.
- D-Bag design (design and size relative to canopy)
- Packing method etc..
I would be happy to discuss this with anyone willing, or drop me a mail.

The lowest thing I have jumped or seen jumped was a 130 foot crane over a lake, PCA, no funny stuff and the jumps went something like this
