winds and buildings
the other night i was on my local B doing my first solo. i noticed that the wind was at my back when i was on the roof. maybe 15-20 tailwind. i went for it and had a bumpy canopy ride. i dont understand i thought tailwinds were better for base because they push you away from the object. any suggestions or experiences shared would be helpful.

Imagine a tractor trailer moving at those speeds. And the disturbed airflow behind it as it moves. You basically jumped into the slipstream/burble of the building. Where the winds are most unpredictable.

I have a nicer way about me than the cock
known as
VID666, but I think him and I both
want to call Bullshit on this one.

Your 6th BASE jump and 2nd object was a B? Solo?
And the winds were 15 to 20? Hmm, Miles or Knots?
If so, good for you and glad you are okay! Seriously.

Each object type has its own best wind conditions and
then each specific object has a secondary wind variable
based on the landing zone, and third for any obstacles.

Generically:
B's no wind is best
A's tail wind is best
S's lz dependent
E's no wind is best

Re: [BunKtious] winds and buildings
the possibility of your canopy stalling because of a tailwind pushing on your trailing edge exists as well. be fucking careful what you do. i was on the top of a local B here in waikiki recently and had to back out (and almost get popped by security) because of a tailwind that was about 10 MPH or so that i didnt feel on the ground. of course that was my own choice.............

Attached is a diagram I draw for my FJC wind lecture, when talking about buildings.

In wind, you should avoid the downwind side of a building. I'd recommend jumping a downwind corner, at 90 degrees to the windline, if at all possible.

Better yet, in 15-20, go find a nice guyed tower and have fun doing floaters. Smile
