The Hangout

the beckoning silence
So Joe Simpson wrote another book regarding Kurz's and his own Eiger experiences. Great follow up to touching the void. I just saw the movie last night and it was pretty sweet. You guys should google that shit.
The best quote of it was from Joe he said "people kept dying and we were quick to ask 'how? what did they do wrong?' so we wouldn't make their mistakes instead we should have been asking why?" Myself and the other jumper in the audience thought that rang true to our own community.

Re: [RJmoney] the beckoning silence
If you're into mountaineering literature, grab a copy of Starlight and Storm.

It's particularly interesting to read his discussions of climbing as a spiritual activity, when many of his peers viewed it as a more macho "conquest". It's not hard to relate that to BASE jumping, and the idea that what's really going on has nothing to do with being rad.

yeah i wan't trying to bring up the debate. just the fact that the movie was good, and i'm sure the book is too. It is pretty interesting how similar simpson and kurz's accidents were, which is a main topic of "the beckoning silence"

sounds like i have some reading to do. luckily my job is conducive to that sort of thing.
