Rick and Joy live in Galveston, TX where Hurricane Ike destroyed all the homes along the beach. Does anyone know where they are and if they are Ok? I have a spare bedroom in my home if they are homeless. Please put them in touch with me.

everything is probably good for _them_. rick let me know two or three days ahead of the hit that they were heading inland with their valuables - including the master base book - to stay with friends or family.

his cell phone goes straight to voicemail but i'm sure we'll hear from him soon... house is 4 ft asl tho so that may be a different story.

I'd like to assume they are healthy. I wish I could assume the same for their home.

Thanks for the note been trying to reach Randy or Rick all week but to no avail. NASA posted an up-to-date satellite picture of the house/area for emergency response services, it appears intact unlike other homes in their area. They began letting residents return Sunday, however many people were reporting flat tiers from storm debris. Actually from what I've read the cleanup has barely begun and landline phone services were interrupted as well as power.

from experience I can tell you that power and telephone service drop out quickly. areas that may not look as bad as Galveston will lose these two critical items.

traffic becomes a nightmare from non-functional traffic lights.

life quickly reverts to a cash economy. without power or phones, credit cards are useless.

banks may be slow to re-open without power, so it may become difficult to get cash.

gas stations frequently lack generators to pump existing supplies out of their storage tanks.

lack of creature comforts like a/c causes people to lose their composure.

even without flooding, life can change very dramatically!

I take it you've been there also; I live in Florida and know the realities of hurricanes as well. I'm sure Rick and Joy are some place comfortable until the basics of life are restored. All we can do is extend our best wishes for now and offer a hand if they need it.

I am a Hurricane Katrina & Rita survivor. I was in New Orleans before, during, after Katrina. I saw and lived the horror that you described in your post. You forgot to mention the lost, hungry dogs and cats running lose in the streets searching for food! And, the boats on the Interstate upside down, and Corporate Jets upside down on the city streets miles from the nearest airport. I was at ground zero, literally in New Orleans on August 29th & 30th, 2005.

HI all. I am Joy's sister. Just spoke with her and Rick. They are both OK. House is mainly OK except for some repairable damage outside. Not liveable for a couple of months. They still have no power where they are so no computer!!
She wanted to thank everyone for the kind thoughts and to let you know that the BASE #'s are safe and dry!!!

oh, and personally, you can lose the BASE book page with my name on it if it meant keeping Rick an Joy safe...

They are staying down the street from me in Houston... literally. Apparently I was carried home a few nights ago, slightly intoxicated
Anyway, last I checked a couple days ago, they were still without power so who knows how long it will be before internet is back up. My place has power now, but still no cable or internet connection. I can only logon from the dropzone currently.

I stayed with Rick and Joy and BASE 58 thanks to 58's mom. Man, this experience was pretty stressful. Even watching ultimate fighting has a calming effect compared to this experience.

quick rick and joy update:

They are safe, the base book is safe, and the house will be okay.

they are now renting a house on galveston island a few miles from their house, which is not livable yet but repairable. some exterior damage but only a few inches of water in their first floor (which is several feet off the slab, on stilts).

they expect to be in that rental for about six months, and being so close makes it easy for rick to supervise the contractors.

they have electricity but no gas, and no internet. they have been told online services will be restored before the middle of the month.

that's it for now.
