No, it isn't that you guys finally convinced me that BASE numbers aren't worthwhile . . .

But I was thinking about it the other night and while I still occasionally jump I'm not really using my BASE number for anything. I stopped signing my posts with about a year ago so why not?

It's a good number and it should be out there doing more.

I'm working out the details with Rick and Joy right now, but they had to agree with me it's mine and I can do anything I want with it. So I'm going to put it on E-bay. But I thought I'd give you guys here first crack at it.

But there are a few ground rules . . .

Bidders have to already be BASE number holders or someone about to send in their qualifying information to Rick and Joy. And I'd actually like to see it go to someone in the latter category.

I'm open to trading numbers too. And we can determine the value of your number and have that reflected in the final price. Then in a later decade I can hawk off that number too.

So BASE 194 is for sale. I'm also talking to some guys with even lower BASE numbers that aren't using them at all. And if I can find a good corner I'm thinking of opening a used BASE number lot.

So come on all you guys with embarrassing 4 digit numbers start putting in your bids.

Ghetto, bro, sorry to tell you but anything above 1000 (including 1000) is worth its count in pennies, not dollars. this was a precedent from earlier attempts by myself to achieve a below 1000 number.

I received 16 serious bids (three from Europe) and it sold for what I think is a fair amount.

Joy said the only limitation is the number in the "BASE Book" will be followed by an asterisk and a note denoting the name change. And although the buyer doesn't have to Joy also suggested they use the asterisk when signing log books and things of that nature.

The buyer asked for privacy and the right to reveal themselves in their own time. And in the end I almost backed out with cold feet as that number meant a lot to me. But a deal is a deal . . .

On a side note I had several email conversations with BASE jumpers, some just starting out, that showed interest in the BASE numbers is very much alive and well.

Well, well, well, all the fairy boys are in an uproar!

With this thread (and thanks 1057 for the final nail) and all the hate PMs and e-mails I received I can clue you toads into the fact I would never - in a million years - sell my BASE number . . .

This was all about two things. First to raise awareness in the BASE numbers and second, and more so, to give you all a dose of you're own medicine.

Remember when a lot of you, in on the joke and not in on the joke, enjoyed it when Maggot had us old guys going ballistic with his fake tagging and taking dumps at launch points?

So how does it feel being played for saps? Not really too cool being jerked around is it?

I can't believe so many of you dopes fell for it. And did you honestly think Joy would let me sell my BASE number?

The really funny PMs were those trying to educate me on how important the BASE numbers were. Really, ya think? But at the same time this did show me the BASE numbers are alive and well. And that made being called every name in the book worth it.

I personally see BASE numbers as an old mans club, not really a joke, but kinda like ranks in the boy scouts without the badges and homophobia.
that aside, thats pretty cool that you did that. there is history and beauty to it, but after the first 100, (or 987) I don't see the point. so many people refuse to get them, it gives you nothing besides a name in a secret book and a plastic card with a handwritten name. (that works awesome as a door lock picking tool)
Also, No disrespect for Joy, she was awesome when I was still gung ho BASE and got my number in '04 and what BASE #s did for BASE is great.

I seriously believed that you sold your number. but I did not see a problem with it. and when I say mine is for sale, I'm not playing a joke. (only half kidding, Joy )

It's natural to become a bit more crotchety as we get older. Just like when younger we cling to "I don't give a fuck."

I do always try to use "we" and "us" rather than "you" or "I' and I know I blow that sometimes but usually when someone attacks me rather than the idea.

But if you believe things like the public lynching of Tom Aiello here and at the other board is acceptable than I don't know what to say to that. You see it as I've changed, but I see it as you've (the collective you) changed.

The crazy and ironic thing is....the most jumpers claim to be individualists only to become (receive) another number.

See I'm jumping my current number 981, while you're a prestigious "sub 200 #," #194.

seeing as I've already got a 9 and a 1 I was interested in the 4, of course if I just bought the four outright I'd be a 4-digit guy, and well, I'm not sure my ego could take the blow! (After all if you have a small one chicks want to be with you, and guys want to be you!).

I was thinking maybe a trade, but then I kinda like the infinity aspect that an 8 provides.
I thought about a trade for your 1 so I could be BASE 911, but that's another can of worms, getting caught on a roof top, and telling security that "it's ok, I'm a professional, I'm BASE "nine-eleven" will probably get me shot, or sent to git-mo.

If one of my friends breaks something, and tells their ground crew to "call 911, he's in my phone" instead of a ride to the hospital, they'll get their gear taken, and a court date. bummer. Then of course there's already some poor schmuck who got 911 ant they've got it hard enough without the competition.
Well, it just seems like too good a deal to pass up, and someone is really gonna score.
Maybe Eric Ryde can get in on this?
