Miha "Kalmar" died on Aug 16 2008

On Aug 16 we had to make some demo jumps. He jumped of the plane on 700m with his Velcro container and it opened almost immediately. Unfortunately he did not realized that his canopy fallen out and he pulled out his PC only on 200m. Seems that PC went through the lines, blocked the slider and left no chances to already knotted canopy... He crashed a fence, hit the ground and died instantly.

Since i met him first time, he dreamed about snowboard base, first month of our friendship we were creating a bigair on the top of his local B. And now I`m really happy because so many years later he finally made his dream real

I hate to say it, but it was also said that his velcro was in piss poor condition and he had very limited exposure to skydiving (i.e. dealing with high-speed airflow). In my mind both are very much contributing factors.

My condolences to family and friends. Miha seemed always relaxed and having fun on the pictures around.
However, base is not the same as skydiving....

did you see that rig? i think no, so please don`t write the things you never known. His velcro was Ok, just it`s basically bad idea to use velcro, even in base.

In reply to:
he had very limited exposure to skydiving

He had enough skydive and terminal jumps experience, so once again - don`t write the things you never known.

I am merely stating what was said to me by sources I consider credible. The lesson we learn again and again is that Velcro is not a great idea for high-speed airflows.

I am not trying to anger the fallen or their friends. However, it is good to learn from ANY fatality. The longer bridles, the larger PCs, the tailgate, the dislike of black rubberbands were all thought of and implemented after carnage/fatalities.

From what you can see in the vid, he can definitely be credited for fighting it....

What surprises me is that he didn't seem to realise before he pitched that he was dragging fabric - the close up clip doesn't show much before he pitches, but from what I could see he was in a tracking pos and not aware that he was dragging.... Anyone had any experience with this? I would have thought, based on how I can feel my deployment happen (both skydiving and BASE), that you would feel something was wrong?

I was thinking the same thing exactly...
It seems every jump picture video he is in shown above he has a large pair of music headphones on (including his last jump video shown in the news clip above and the base picture at the top of the page).

Im not casting aspertions on his state of mind or concentration when he was jumping but I know, for me, an Ipod blaring away in my ears would be THE LAST thing I want when I am doing a skydive, let alone a base jump. Its not a wise time for such distractions IMHO....

There's virtually no net drag in the burble this close to the body, where the canopy seemed to be entangled with itself and the container. So you can have a mess on your back and not notice a thing.

Mikha was one of the greatest persons I've ever known. He influenced in a positive way everyone he met. He would tell stories about B.A.S.E.-jumping for hours while listeners would sit around with their eyes, mouths and minds wide open. "Grandpa Kalmar fairy tales" - that's what we called it. He was my jumpmate when I did my first PC-stowed {B}-jump. I remember us marching up the stairs to the 35th floor - me first, imitating PC throw from the BOC; Kalmar following, and non-stop telling his "fairy tales" to calm me down and mentally prepare me for the jump.

Thank you, my gentle friend, my Mentor, B.A.S.E. to the bone. You were the inspiration for many of us. Rest in peace or fly free - whatever you feel like. I will remember you until I c'ya.

Fair point Space; I suppose that the only thing to learn is that you could be in this situation and not know... and maybe the reality of that would make a prospective new jumper think twice. However, having been that prospective new jumper and knowing that this would have made no difference to me, its probably a moot point...

edited as I just watched the video of the incident..
Velcro containers FTL

im not sure of the procedures in Russia, but if he was doing a demo skydive from a plane.

Why did he not a reserve?
That mess could have been cutaway and he may have survived it..?

Re: [humanflite] Miha "Kalmar" died on Aug 16 2008
wtf are you talking about? the only way 'count to 5 and check canopy' even applies is if he had initiated deployment Crazy

do you spend every skydive counting to 5 and repeatedly checking your canopy before even pitching?

Yep. It was late Wink
and I hadnt watched the video and thought it was PC in tow or similiar. Once I saw the vid it became clear but I forgot to edit that last bit of my post.
its not relevant at all in this incident..

Where the huck did you read about skydive? what are you talking about? I already explained the only reason, and now is too late to ask why he did so.

Where Im from...jumping out of a plane is called a skydive, regardless of altitude or demo jump etc Smile

and regarding being experienced. I have friends with 5000 plus skydives who say they would never jump with any ipod or music blaring due to safety issues, not hearing warning shouts, not hearing canopies etc...comes down to personal preference I guess.

If you`re seeing the things so clear then why are u asking about reserve and making stupid theories "he may have survived". Relax, smoke a bit or jump out a plane, have fun and forget stupid russian jumpers. And by the way, get your own experiece and then maybe you will not be scared by electronic devices.
