Seen any good movies lately?
The wife and I recently watched "In Bruges".

It was good, I wouldd highly recommend it.

Hell any flick w/ guns, drugs, hookers & a dwarf

is a must see movie in my book.

Regulars should be getting the inside joke

Read Any Good Books Lately?
I recently read a great book titled "Refeer Madness".

The title is a nod to the black & white propaganda
film set back in the 20's or 30's depicting our old
friend Mary Jane as the devil's weed causing the
good boys & girls of America to do crazy things
like jump out of windows in tall buildings after
just one or two tokes.

The book, same author as
"Fast Food Nation",
chronicles 3 areas of underground economic
activity in America over the last 80 years:

1. Marijuana - growing & selling
2. Illegal Immigrant Labor
3. Pornography

Leroy's tag line made me think of the book.

RE: the third taboo and J. Edgar Hoover...

The F.B.I. during harsh anti-porn eras had several
commissions to track and bust people who shipped
any item construed to be porn across state lines.
Including condoms or even any type of printed
material simply discussing birth control.

In the process the bureau, under Hoover, collected
the largest collection of porn ever amassed anywhere.

they may have been right when they made refeer madness because everytime i smoke i jump out windows too so maybe they were right back in the 30's

I'd like to get into base jumping too! I've been parasailing several times on vacation and my mom says I was really good at it.

My mom took me to 'Hersey Park' in PA.

Am I ready too? Tongue

Re: [GreenMachine] I'd like to get into BASE

Yeah, I think that pretty much qualifies you. You might want to get a few scuba dives under your belt just to be on the safe side!
Shortcut
Re: [ashman22] I'd like to get into BASE
Since we are talking about books and scuba diving - Deep Descent: Adventure And Death Diving The Andrea Doria is a good one.

Based on the relatively limited number of people who have dove the Doria and the body count it has amassed, it is probably a less forgiving challenge than BASE.

And why is everyone busting the original posters balls?

Re: [1108] I'd like to get into BASE
Mostly just because it's really funny! Most people don't have time to help someone get into base jumping, but posting jokes only takes a minute.
Shortcut
why is everyone busting balls?
The joke is that every month someone
posts the same thread, "
How do I get
into BASE jumping", usually with about
a dozen skydives.

Both the question and the lack of jump
experience shows that they have done
about zero research.

So typically people post silly responses,
and the thread topic drifts. So how are
things with you dude?

But how are they supposed to know they need to do research before they come to a website like this and ask?

Is there something about it printed in PARACHUTIST every month that I keep missing?

Yeah, I guess posting is a natural
first thought... back when this forum
was still attached to dz.com Tom A.
had a thing at the top that read:

Before You Post...

Part of it that cracks me up is the guys
with 2 or 3 skydives who start asking
about how to BASE... I mean do they
think they have already mastered 1
discipline so time to hit the next.

Like guys who do 3 months of karate,
maybe 2 months of judo, and then
call themself a Mixed Martial Artist.

That could be. Some base jumpers are skydivers too aren't they?

Re: [GreenMachine] To: [NickDG] RE: research
I guess you would'nt want to take people on from the start of there jumping life, and mold them into a bad ass, knowing there stuff, crw dog, climbing, base jumper's... as it would make so many of you look shit.... Wink

Best bet is to wait untill you have 200 jumps all of which must be under guidance by the bpa or uspa manual, enrole on a course and flick your s from some bridge where as long as you have only semi trashed your pack you'll be fine.

Sounding a bit like dz.com on here!

I was reffering more along the lines of the skydivers that don't even want to talk to people with under 500 or 1000 skydives...like if you haven't quit your job and lost your girlfriend to "live the dream" you aren't worthy of their time. Or the skydivers who are anti-BASE. Or the skydivers that have been to bridge day and made two jumps and think they are totally bad-ass for it and know everything about BASE.

My guess is that if the original poster had met skydivers who BASE, he wouldn't have made this post in the first place...

Re: [crashtested] To: [NickDG] RE: research
Crashtested made perfect sense..

He's saying that people want you to have hundreds of skydives before they even will talk to you about BASE. So then a guy goes out and spends 100 jumps learning to sitfly with the freefly load organizers.

Whereas a better path would be for mentors to actually be involved in some of those 200, 300 whatever number of skydives to a certain extent, doing CRW, accuracy and tracking stuff...skydives tailored towards skills more applicable to BASE than trying not to backslide in a sit or being proficient in the mantis position or hurrying to downsize so you can jump in the higher winds that come every afternoon.

Re: [crashtested] To: [NickDG] RE: research
are you saying you want BASE guidance from the get-go?

why not learn climbing from a climbing expert?
why not learn crw from a crw dog?
why not learn first aid from an accredited organization?
why not learn equipment from a master rigger?

you can build valuable skills before even meeting a BASE jumper. once you meet, they are more likely to respect your effort.

p.s.
the sort of training you seek tends to be available only when you wish to pay, such as in skydiving.

Re: [1108] I'd like to get into ...
Freeflying is a lot of fun if you do more than just assume "the position"

CRW is fun but damn, good luck finding people to jump with you at certain dropzones.

Most BASE jumpers I know are freeflyers. Some are extremely skilled freeflyers as well. Most of them have little to no CRW experience but can handle any canopy really well.

Also, my comment about skydivers was rhetorical. I've had people who had between 1 jump and 1000's of jumps ask about BASE. Most are intrigued for about half a pack job. If asked about it, I'll attempt to be informative but will change the subject if person simply isn't attentive.

Re: [hookitt] I'd like to get into ...
When we start having a'go' at a first time poster...its time to re evaulate your sense of self importance.

Whether they get the 'reality info' via their own research....being told it online ....being told it in person....see how they react /behave when they have it.

It does say alot when someone posts without having followed what we see as a readly available stream of info sources....it might be to us, maybe not to them.

I say see how they behave after they have the info....that tells me much more about the person.

Too much judgement by those in it already.....
chill the fuck out (a bit)....just because you base jump, you aint a 'god'
Educate them rather than isolate them...

Ive seen the best and worst of the
'give interested parties a break', over in these parts.
Being a twat as a source of help....in order to attempt to 'limit' those entering the game...just doesnt help or work in the bigger scheme of things.

Give them the help they need...until they demonstrate they aint worthy of any more/ or dont need it anymore.
Its pretty easy guys.

Perfect !! yes i am...

skilled at getting my point across.. not so much.

Thanks for clearing that up 1108 Smile

I wish i'd spent more wet weather days at the dz learning how to flat pack like a pro, and more flat jumps earlier on, Rather than playing hide the sausage with an array of tandem, and raps students!!!

well kind of!
