packing 180's
any sage advice (or previous threads) on packing 180's at the bridge? I'm told its as easy as flipping the cacooned canopy just before folding it into the container, and that its better training than doing floater exits facing the bridge which is what I've done before.

Being somewhat paranoid I wonder if there are any big cautions about this (ie be sure you don't <blank> or you'll die for sure!)

Thanks

just pack very asymmetrically, tighten one side of your harness much more than the other, use an asymetrically attached pilot chute, and perhaps use a Gravity Sports Hook pilot chute. Maybe there's a market to make crummy pilot chutes that cause spiraling pilot chutes to induce 180s.

Yes just do what you said

Now if you're lucky, you'll get a 180 and have a full line twist and be flung into another twist or 2.

Good times. Don't drown!

I know its done, but I'd be skeptical of ever intentionally packing myself some kind of malfunction in the BASE environment.

The bridge you are probably planning on doing this at is already a death magnet of sorts due in large part to people taking it lightly.

And you already broke stuff off a bridge with a good packjobTongue

Re: [kusgra] packing 180's
I would pack assymetrical, not a packed 180. as i a clean packjob twisted. the chances of line twist a few meters up the lines is to large. and that many twist means no control, no chance of climbing above, and in all seriousness you will fly into the wall with nothing you can do.

you could leave the clamp on one side, or the nose. trust me, it causes a 180. Crazy (at the bridge)

I can back that up, same thing same bridge a few years ago. count your tools.

Re: [kusgra] packing 180's
I did it about 5-6 times at the Perrine (flipping the packjob). I wanted to simulate how I thought my body would get thrown around during a 180 (as opposed to simply doing a full floater) and thought this would induce a little more of the "oh shit" factor in my brain.

Anyway, I did end up getting wet once and agree with those who say it will give you serious line twists. I think an asymmetric packjob/harness tension might be a better idea.

If you do decide to do it anyway, when you have the offheading with line twists, please remember that the nice safe water underneath the nice safe bridge is surrounded by nasty pointy flesh-eating rocks. Correct your heading first, correct your heading first!

Please note that I'm not a terribly experienced jumper compared to those who have previously posted Smile

i tried that a couple years ago there. it was a short trip, and over a mere 25-30 jumps i got the 'best' off-headings by twisting 180s or 360s into the lines before putting them into the tailpocket. i believe another person tried putting multiple line twists in, and in at least one case, the line twists were so bad, the risers forced his chin onto his chest until he kicked out of them! but he can speak for that himself if he wantsWink i tried 3-4 line twists only once and they were pretty straightforward to kick out of, but i decided i didn't really feel like doing that again. my ugliest asymmetric packjobs seemed to yield up to nearly 90 deg off heading, but nothing worse. of course i should try 250-300 pack jobs like that, instead of 25-30. that was on a dagger 278 in a warlock btw. with about 100 jumps on this setup my worst off-headings have been from crosswinds, so if i wanted to get a bad offheading i might try a side floater when the wind is up/down the canyon??

I'm an infrequent jumper, not trying to offer advice, and i wouldn't make any safety inferences on this. just thinking out loud here... i learned more about packing from it, particularly from the other jumpers who were kind enough to stop and offer advice, than i did about correcting off-headings.

You can induce the same sorts of off headings (and worse) without the wind by just getting a PCA and having your PC holder stand at full bridle stretch to one side of your exit location.

Thanks Tom, I'll try that next week, the front floaters were good too.
