What kind of base jumper are you?
I find most jumpers are one or a combination of these types... The Undercover basejumper
This guy does it for the love of BASE. It's a personal thing and he/she rarely talks about it, he just does it. He goes about his jumping with other like-minded undercover jumpers for the sheer pleasure of the experience, and will often even jump on his own. Sometimes these guys don't even film themselves because their ego is so secure and they don't need anyone's approval. You can sometimes even know these people for months before you find out they are jumpers.
The Friendly knowledgeable basejumper
The smart base jumper. Knows everything about gear, exit points, landing areas, malfunctions, packing techniques, you name it - but he doesn't talk down to anyone ever, and he's always got time to help people. He's never above you, never below you, always with you (metaphorically speaking). This is the Brian Germain type, who is all about jumping, passing on knowledge, having fun, and making the sport safer. A great person to be around.
The look-at-me-I'm SO-EXTREME-and-special basejumper
This guy will introduce himself to you followed by "I'm a basejumper!!!" (and then give you a knowing look and a nod). He's the guy who wore the 'My Sport Ate Your Sport For Breakfast' t-shirts when he started skydiving, and refers to other sports as 'weenie-cheese'. He thinks of himself as a dangerous and radical individual. If it ain't on camera it ain't worth doing, because he's gonna need that footage for as many people as possible to get his real fix - other peoples reactions. The jumping itself is secondary.
The enthusiastic arty basejumper
Like the wire-walker Philippe Petit, this jumper is high on life, into the art and the romance of jumping. His personality is engaging and he is generally dramatic, creative, fun and charismatic. He loves to jump and look for newer and more breath-taking experiences to share with his friends. This person is a pleasure and often an inspiration to be around. These people are very sociable and love to meet new jumpers all around the world with whom they feel a special bond.
The secret society basejumper
This person doesn't see basejumping as a sport or a pleasure pursuit, but as some kind of covert secret service operation. They tend to enjoy the more sneaky jumps (or missions). When normal civilians ask them about jumping, they will retort with a "who wants to know?" attitude, as they love people to think of them as mysterious and misunderstood, or rather like a secret agent! These people often think they somehow own the sport, as if jumping off a cliff can only be achieved if you know the secret handshake and are sanctioned by the community and follow strict rules of engagement.
