canopy heading factors
Routinely have jumped a 245 vtec for years. Nearly always have onheadings with it. the notorious banana canopy for those who have been around a decade or more. Recently i have been jumping 265 fox vtec, and am surprised if I open within 30 degrees of on heading. Last jump two nights ago had about 120 or so on 270' freestander that sharpened my skills. I weight 155 lbs. Anybody here have opening problems when jumping a canopy that is perhaps under-loaded?? I know there are dozens of other factors involved but question whether too much fabric for too little mass is a problem.

"I need to check my pants for white paint"

I know its not constructive help but i dont know shit and just wanted to throw that one liner in Laugh

It did look as if you opened facing directly into wind though, it was a bit crossy and nasty.

try a different pilot chute.

is it always opening to one particular direction?

Re: [Andy_Copland] canopy heading factors
In my opinion, so many factors can apply to heading, its going to be hard to get an accurate answer. I believe if you could find an indoor, no wind, no turbulence situation (will probably never happen), you could do several test jumps under different loadings to create an accurate answer, but its still a parachute and as we all know...it does what it wants!

For what it's worth, I have about 200 jumps on a Fox 245 vtec with excellent heading performance. I weigh in at about 145 lb, so I don't think your problem is wing loading.

Im just under 70kg myself (155lbs) and I jump a Blackjack 260. I don't seem to have a problem. I think your 244 is perfect. I jumped a 222 for my first few years jumping, and don't see much of a difference in heading performance.

i experienced the same thing, i had 30 jumps on a troll285mdv..i weighted 160 at that time, i might had 5 on-headings rest was off, 180`s line-twist..closed-end cells.
I know jump a Troll246mdv...and can`t remember last time i had off-heading...i have more than 100 jumps on a troll 245...

Re: [johan420] canopy heading factors
have jumped vented and non vented, f-111 to zero p pilot chutes and it seems to open like a game of craps. my 245 I can count on. It's got accuracy trophies from old tombstone challenge days. Never had a 180 or even a 90 on it. Dunno. Now I know I was doomed for an off heading on this particular jump, and warned andy and jimmy to watch for it cuz I had an asymmetric pack job. I find it harder perhaps to pack a 265 as neatly. I don't know. I like challenges, like dodging cellular antennaes which stick out from structures, but if this keeps up I'm gonna need new underwear. My wife, who washes them, said to stick with the 245 and jump the 265 slider up!

Maybe I'm the one who is the scizophrenic psycho!!

Re: [base386] canopy heading factors
I am 125lbs under a Fox vtec 265, and I have great heading performance. My Troll 180 is the one I have more (slight) off-headings with, but that's because it's my gainer rig. Packing bigger rigs is definitely harder. I use zero packing tools on my 180 and at least eight clamps on my 265. And, I have to throw in what I tell everyone with any kind of opening problems, Check the line trim. Or, you can send it down to me and I'll do some test jumps for ya.

Maybe your packing has just gotten a bit better with more experience....thats a more likley explanation.

Did you change containers at the same time you changed canopies?
