One more jump before surgery?
Say you dislocated your shoulder and tore the labrum. The joint is unstable, and dislocates fairly easily, i.e. rolling over onto that side while sleeping may cause it to dislocate. You see a doctor and he says you need surgery, but it is going to be a month before you can get the operation done. The doc says it will be six months to a year post-surgery before you can jump again. Would you jump with a high risk of dislocation upon opening or wait it out? Also you know you can flare and land softly with one hand, bc you've done it before. This is all hypothetical of course. Angelic

Re: [hikeat] One more jump before surgery?
Dude. I did a complete orbital seperation of the labrum with a biceps tendon tear in March 2006. Jumped for a year and a half (shoulder dislocated when I docked in freefall and hurt when I climbed) before I decided to get it fixed.

Had surgery September 2007. First BASE jump back was in about November, but it hurt like hell for a bit.

It kept getting better - but cramped up on ladders...and squeeked a little.

I was 100% by about March. My doctor told me the same shit. Just do your PT and work through the pain.

Cheers.

P.S. The surgery was the single most painful experience of my life. Have fun!

Man... I don't know if my opinion matters to you much, but I just hurt my back pretty bad skydiving (having done a stupid toy jump and ended up rolling my back as if I did a " super arch" (arch WAY too far).

Let yourself heal. I have been jumping and it's been preventing my injury from healing, and my skydiving from progressing. I know the itch is bad, real bad, but go with your surgery and let your body ready itself for your next great adventure., I know you are thinking the same thing, "I need to jump", but discipline is the real issue. It's worth it, my friend. Wait it out.

Anterior or posterior dislocation?

I used to wear a brace and sometimes still do. My shoulder is finally tightening up on it's own but it used to come out pretty easy.

The brace is basically an arm band, plus a chest band with a 4 to 5 inch piece of webbing to connect the 2. As you raise the arm, like when you jump outward or reach up for toggles, the connector will pull the arm in tighter.

If it comes out so easy that you have to jump and just hold your arm to your chest, that's just bad and you should forget about jumping with out either fixing it or using a brace that will hold it tighter as you raise the arm. Keep in mind, none of the commercial braces I've seen are worth their weight in pennies. A simple set up like I described works wonders though.

Screw jumping, it's not that important.
