After much debate and input from many friends, Jerry's family moved him from Harlem Hospital to Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, which will be better suited to his long-term care. They have him in ICU due to his condition, so visiting hours and anything sent are limited at this time. He underwent surgery to repair head trauma, which was a success and will soon be undergoing surgery to help repair the damaged area around T-2 to T-5 in his spine.

Jerry has an incredibly long road to recovery ahead of him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

He wracked his bike a few blocks away from where he lives in East Harlem, I do not know anything about the dynamics of the accident.



He was wearing a helmet but no other types of protection. The helmet did save his life.



His injuries include a skull fracture that was taken cared of via surgery the same night, broken ribs, shoulder, and about 5 broken vertebrae, T1-5. T1-4 are not a big deal, spiral fractures, horn fractures, and such, none involved the spinal canal. T5 is the problem child.
Nobody gave me any numbers on the condition of T5 but it really does no look too good. Jerry currently is paralyzed T5 down meaning chest down at the diaphragm level.



He is being transferred to the Jacobi Medical Center which is home of the Albert Einstein Medical School: http://www.nyc.gov/html/hhc/jacobi/home.html



Without any number related to the fracture, I cannot even make a guess on the prognosis.



He will need surgery on T5 for sure. What we know is that Jerry has no feelings chest down. This does not mean he will paralyzed forever. What it means is that at this point in time the signals coming in and out of T5 are compromised and this is due to two extremes plus a whole variety of things between them. The best possible scenario is that the neuronal deficits are due to simply pressure from the trauma. The other extreme of course is the spinal cord being completely severed. And of course you have a whole shade of gray where there is some spinal cord damage that can vary from very severe to mild. We do not know if Jerry will walk again at this point. MRIs, scans, and x-rays can only tell you so much.



Wednesday he will have surgery and only then we will know the severity of the spinal injury at T5.



Again, the thoracic spinal nerve 5 is the one that is compromised. T5 has motor neurons innervating the chest, sensory pathways bringing information to the brain about the chest, and para and sympathetic components innervating some internal organs. At this point is way to premature to foresee which parts have suffer from damage.



What we know is that is brain is just as damaged as it was before the accident, that was the part I was very worry initially. Knowing that, Jerry will have higher than normal chances of recovery due to his personality and MDs most of the times fail to keep in mind the human components among a million other things...



Even if this whole ordeal means wheelchair, there are options like stem cell treatment that he could get in china and worse comes to worse wingsuit BASE tandems which I'll be more than happy to provide the service.



I'll keep you in the loop about his conditions.

Hey Everyone,

I'm not a base jumper, but I do know Maggot from The Ranch. We weren't real familiar with each other, but it would be impossible not to know who he was, without his antics and his attitude. He stood out from the rest. And not just because of his abilities. I don't much about his Base Jumping, but I do know he is a World Class Skydiver. He also had the talent to be very entertaining as well.

Two years ago we both lost our mothers within a very short time. We had a short man to man talk about the situations we were both facing and how to deal with it. There are no easy answers to that situation, But we ended our conversation with a hug. It's probably the only time i've ever called him Jerry.

Jerry I can now only offer you my well wishes and hope for a full and speedy recovery.

i like the responses on this post. im stoked to see everyone pulling for him. im sure when he is able to get in front of a computer and read this thread he will be stoked too.

We never met maggot...but heard good stories from slambo...epic deal you recieved...but it sounds from other stories that you are a great athlete and have a strong character and this is what is needed most in times like this and of course great support from those around you...which i hope you have.
What I have found mattered most when I suffered a spinal injury, that caused a few months of paralysis, followed by a year of rehab is to be a stubborn mother fucker and not refuse to quit through all the painful rehab and the doctors negativity about your future. Fight one day at a time. I wish you the best and I hope our paths cross one day in the future.

Jerry has gone through one hell of a week. His lung collapsed early this week and fluid was found in the other today. He is incubated and being closely monitored. All his films and ct scans have been sent to some of the top doctors in the area and on a good note the team at Columbia Presbyterian has agreed to accept him as a surgery candidate. As soon as he is well enough it looks like he will be moved and surgery will be performed. He has also been accepted to Kessler Rehab Institute, one of the best rehab hospitals in the country. He will be moved there after surgery.Will keep you posted.

IIRC, maggot did at least one AFF style jump with a paraplegic BASE jumper a few years back. possibly multiple jumps.

again, IIRC, a motorcycle accident paralyzed that jumper. so, I guess he met "someone else had bumped into same situation he is in now..."

I am very proud of the support the BASE community shows to it's own. it is inspiring to watch severely injured jumpers fight back. I applaud NickNitro for taking the lead and encourage everyone to do what they can.

(btw, not everyone got maggot's humor. that was why he was banned often. not everyone gets mine either.)

Jerry is scheduled to have spinal surgery today at Jacobi. There were other hospitals willing to take him but due to his condition his family decided it would be best to have the surgery at Jacobi. He was running a fever last night so his condition will determine when the surgery will take place.

He has been under sedation most of the week with many tubes throughout his body and he is bandaged up and his body is swollen. Everyone is hoping that after this surgery he will begin to recover.

As far as what Tom posted about sending money to one of the locals, even though Nick can be an incredible a-hole he is a very close friend of Jerry's and his heart is in the right place and will deliver every dime to Jerry so please don't let that affect your decision to donate. Jerry was working as a Union carpenter and a bunch of his fellow workers are also trying to get together a benefit for him.

Many people have gone thru similar situations as far as broken backs are concerned so they know what a long hard expensive road is ahead of Jerry. I know how much he loved this sport and how much he loved the people in it even though he wrote some incredible dumb shit on these forums at times. I'm sure he will thank all of us when he starts to recover.I'll keep you posted.

I heard from Sangiro this morning and he said no, he doesn't want us fund raising for Maggot on DZ.com. And it was obvious from his message that he's pretty much had it with us BASE jumpers.

I didn't argue the decision with him. I didn't because I couldn't make much of a case for ourselves. You can only continually poke someone with a stick and keep saying I'm joking for just so long. And too many of us were guilty of it, including me. But in my case it was through my own stupidity and not just to get a rise out of people, or to stir the shitpot. I didn't, and still don't, get that kind of mentality.

But more important is no matter how the stem cell idea plays out for him, Maggot will still need long term care. Maybe we can do something at Bridge Day this October with Jason's permission. Some donation cans at the gear check might help.

What I'm saying now isn't directed at Maggot. He's on a whole different plane of existence now. But there's a lesson in the aftermath of this for the rest of us. The brotherhood that's been dissed so mercilessly here as no longer applicable to BASE jumping is showing its true colors. And that's something we can be proud of . . .

Hello all, Bryan Cavage, Maggot's Longtime Best Friend, Base Jumper and Skydiver here. The Donation Site Nick Rugai has setup, is completely legit and all monies will be given to Maggot directly. Everyone should trust Nick, as this is a reality situation for us. I have been in contact with all NYC Base Jumpers. Stephen Boyle, Ryan, and Cowboy Nick.

Also, the research and time that Nick, Boyle, and Adam was extensive and volunteer and is very commendable and more than any friend could ever ask for.

Also, Jerry's sister has setup a site that can keep everyone updated with his status, etc. There is a room for a guestbook, etc. She has been at the hospital since day one, and is handling all this like a rockstar.

I have my differences of opinion with Nick (as I am sure a few others do too) and I have let this escalate to some petty arguing on the internet in the past.



I still have my differences of opinion with Nick and probably always will, but I know he is 100% behind Maggot on this one and I think he is one of the best people to do what he is doing right now.



Please don't let some differences in the past make you doubt Nick's motivations or stop you from helping. I haven't let it stop me.



I stand behind Nick in this effort, I am sending him all the Maggot video and pics I have by Fedex later today.

We were instant friends when Maggot walked over to say Hi.

Maggot dedicated his trip to Twin to helping Stephen get his FJC and a few more jumps done.



Stephen himself has had firsthand experience spinal cord injury and has done things the doctors said he never would.



Let's help Nick (and Stephen because I know he's putting everything he can into this) help Maggot to make the best recovery he can.

Sorry to hear it was on a motorcycle...as a rider myself I often debate between which is more dangerous, the jump out of the plane or the motorcycle...obviously the jump out of the plane (or bridge) is imminently more dangerous, but it's how easy it is to get hit by someone else and/or just get to relaxed on a motorcycle that is a big factor...

Our boy Jerry went thru spinal surgery like a trooper and came out with flying colors. Two vertebrate were crushed, T-2 and T-4 I believe. When the surgeon talks to us will let you know. He has been sit up to help his lungs work better. The doctors have let the sedition were off and increased his medications as of 2pm Sat he is still not conscious. He still looks swollen throughout his body and his shoulder needs to be worked on. So all in all he seems to be on the road to recovery. will keep you posted.

Jerry came off sedation today and started to respond to simple commands. The hope is he can now be scheduled for surgery to patch his skull and also surgery on his shoulder. We also hope that every day will bring him closer to his normal,whatever that is, self. When surgery is complete he will begin rehab at Kessler rehab in West Orange, NJ

This is Ron. I am Maggot's brother in law. The site for Jerry and his family was started by two of Jerry's friends, not our family. I can assure you that every dime will be given to Jerry, not our families travel costs. It was a nice gesture, but this is all Jerry's money. For those of you who don't know us, you can ask Cowboy Nick, Ryan, or Bryan about us and how much Jerry means to us. We have been at the hospital every single day for 8 hours a day since July 12th. Many people have said that they feel Nick Rugai has ulterior motives and didn't want to donate through him. Donate wherever you damn well please, but trust me Jerry is getting every dime on our end.

No doubt!!! Ron and Holly are never absent every time I go visit. They spent their anniversary there and will spend Ron's birthday there on monday. They have huge hearts and I can only hope that if I'm ever racked up this bad I've got folks like that on my side. (Just don't trust them with your furniture.... good thing Brian is a master chair repairman using nothing but spit and chewing gum!) As far as who to donate to.... neither party would ever take advantage of jerry. (well, i do remember nick shaving jerry's drunken head a few weeks ago but that's completely different. Here's Jerry coming into to the hospital all banged up with a giant 'M' carved into the back of his hair. I would assume he cleaned that up before hand but if not it had to raise a few eyebrows.

Regarding Nick raising money for Maggot, these are two of my good friends and we have each hauled the other out of a less than desirable predicament. Nick is as concerned about Jerry's future as anybody I have spoken with. Don't think for a minute he has any thoughts other than bettering the rest of Jerry's life in any way possible.

As for Maggot, when you get well enough you can sit around and read through this dribble I want you to know I wish I could have done something to have prevented this terrible accident, as I'm sure everyone else that cares about does. But given the situation you are a strong individual and will make the best of whatever is thrown at you.

Jerry's family, we have never met and may never meet, but just notice how many people are pulling for this guy that most people talked crap about on line. He has impacted many lives in a way that cannot always be understood by reading posts on the internet. I know it is already one of the tougher things one could imagine dealing with but you all have one hell of a team in your corner. Thank you for keeping us up to date on Maggot's condition and never be concerned about asking for help.

When I first met Maggot, he truly pissed me off. But having the pleasure of knowing him for several years, I have a great respect for him.

He pushed a big ol’ pile up front, pressed every button on the nuclear control panel, but after you get over it and look behind the scenes, you understand and laugh with him.

Maggot lived life better than any given billion people walking this planet.

Jerry really enjoyed Little Colorado. Generally, he’s living at light speed. All geared up and ready to go he jetted up to the exit point and then just suddenly flipped a switch. He gazed over the canyon, sat down and said, “I think I’ll just enjoy this for a while”. I have never seen him so calm. I smiled, “Yeah, it’s beautiful, 70 out and not a breeze.” Not a word after that, he just stared out over the incredible canyon views and took it all in.

Of course, when he was ready to go he was like a meteor entering the atmosphere.

A massive dose of pure energy has left us. The man was radiation walking.
