Re: [GreenMachine] COOL Video

With all due respect...
I got to agree with nicrussell, what was so bad
about that video? It was good footage, well edited,
looked like legal objects, incorporated many great
artistic techniques, and none of it was just a simple
"HEY LOOK AT ME"
unless you want to bag on
the little kid in the red helmet.
the counter culture of the 60's clashed harshly with the establishment. musicians who let advertising companies use their songs were accused of "selling out." a US president even used the FBI to collect evidence to deport a singer.
then in 1981, the Rolling Stones started touring with massive advertising support. they chose Jovan. artists started accepting money, but retained integrity.
by now, most major artists of that era have had their music used in commercials. I believe even Bob Dylan.
BASE can appear similar. one huge exception is that some believe the added attention makes MOST jumps in the US harder to perform. the extra awareness can lead to enhanced security.
of course, so much of this is predictable. as new people cycle through, they bring the latest skydiving attitudes toward video. some may only make 20 BASE jumps, but will have every one on video!
a lot depends on the motivation of the person making the video. so many are routine, tandem mill style videos that successfully document jumps, but rarely do much more. DB's video tried to tell a story and move beyond the majority of work out there.
finally, many people who came before
declined opportunities to show off. maybe they learned after being burned. they felt a low profile benefited the sport. they advanced the gear and techniques after knowing too many friends suffer. when the newer generation chooses to profit, it rankles those who developed the sport and chose to remain hidden.
everything changes. enthusiastic youths typically push "progress." more experienced folk defend the old ways. you can find examples all around.
just like newbies asking how to get into the sport, this topic regularly re-surfaces.
