spectra lines
Thinking of getting a canopy with spectra lines, for use with both slider up and down.

Have heard convincing and definite recommendations both for and against, from riggers and experienced jumpers. Any specific or firsthand experiences or knowledge from anyone?
Merci Gracias ciao!

Why? And ouch! What have you heard as a positive for having them on slider down jumps?

That's ridiculous. Think about it...why would a set of ZERO stretch lines be good for slider down.

Re: [stephdp] spectra lines
hi,
i also got a troll with spectra lines. but this is ONLY for slider up!!!Shocked
the reason for that is that spectra lines do not stretch at all. therefore the canopy opening would be extremely hard if it would been jumped slider down.
base canopys which are used for slider down jumps have dacron lines. these lines will stretch. therefore the hard opening shock is getting reduced by the lines.

may i ask why you only wanna get a canopy that has got spectra lines?
if you wanna have a canopy with spectra lines it's for slider up (get yourself a razor with a trango)! if you wanna jump slider down too, get yourself a second canopy with dacron lines Wink. if you only get one rig which you wanna use for both (slider up + down) the canopy should definitely have dacron lines (get yourself a helium / troll package as the helium is also a light weight rig which can be packed pretty flat so that you get a good aerodynamical shape of the rig).

In my opinion, the spectra (non-stretching) lines will also be more sensitive to body position, meaning that even small errors in body position can lead to noticeable off heading performance.

Thanks for the good info/theories!

Does anyone have any personal experience with jumping spectra lines, particularly slider down?

Or know of any specific incidents or jumpers who do/did use spectra lines, either slider down or up?

Thanks!!

There is probably a reason all of the coments are theoretical...

Re: [stephdp] spectra lines
Hi Steph, I have some experience with spectra and kevlar lined canopies. Slider down with low/no stretch lines you will feel openings alot more. Tom's post about offheadings has merit. It is my understanding that with minor line twists you can steer through with spectra lines because of the slippery nature of that type line. Downside of spectra is the lower melting point, so if you have some crazy out of sequence deoployment the line might get damaged easier. If you are putting alot of abuse on your canopy (Long delay/ hard openings) you will need to do more frequent and detailed inspections. Parts like line loops, stitching at or around line attatchments might fail a little sooner.

Re: [stephdp] spectra lines
I don't have a lot of details, but there was a Hollywood stuntman/BASE jumper who went to the S cliff in Arizona and had a wall strike while jumping a spectra lined canopy. While in the hospital he tried to sell his story to the TV news stations and they all turned him down. This was a couple of years ago. Perhaps you can track him down and give him a couple bucks for his thoughts on spectra.

spectra lines are NOT good for sl. down jumping.
spectra does not stretch and therefore the shock is much higher for both, canopy and the jumper. If it is a must , jump can be performed but than look to make no delay , just simple go - throw jump.
In such occasions the canopy will just perform the same as any Dacron canopy, with greather shock of course. The all above said , like... lack of stretching may induce greater off heading, etc... are more or less speculation. Good thing about spectra on sl. up jumps are lighter canopy, less mass to handle on opening. Spectra is less pron to tension knot.
