My 1st BASE jump - Moab?
Why do people come to Moab to make their 1st BASE jump?

Re: [clint] My 1st BASE jump - Moab?
are you asking why they do it because moab jumps are more technical than most first time jumpers can handle? if that's what you mean...the answer is simple.

you're right, it's probably not a good idea for first time jumpers, but here it is. it's like my gramma used to say. FUCK IT!

There's been 2 "Grand County" helicopter rescues in the last week. Sorta freaky if they're you friends. Just keep it cool folks.......and think about the topic! I will leave the gramma comment alone.

It is not and should not be a place for low time jumpers, let alone 1st timers. There will be old jumpers and bold jumpers but never both... (nevermind this is BASE...)

I'm not to sure about the question...so i will make an assumption...if i'm wrong...sorry!
I think you feel Moab is a poor place for a 1st jump...if so ...I agree that their are better choices to make for your first BASE jump...but people will always make their own choice and with that freedom they may suffer the consequence of a poor choice. We can share our wisdom with others...but in the end people will take their own path.
Bad results usually happen from human error..but the problem with that one is we are all human...maybe running of a cliff with a parachute is failing the IQ test for some...for others a whole lot of FUN ...of course if all goes to plan...sometimes we only understand the risk and reward concept when we have seen the ugly...but in the end none of us are permanent...so lets not take ourselves to serious...who ever has the most fun wins...maybe i should say who ever has the most fun the longest winsWink

100% absolutely no disrespect to the folks who were recently rescued nor the folks who've been hurt in the past jumping moab. what i meant was this. it's no secret that a low, sub-terminal, slider down cliffs, little to no out landing and technical landing at that (which most of moab would qualify for all of the above) is no place for low and more specifically first timers. even with the most knowledgeable folks in the sport recommending that jumpers have some good experience prior to jumping anything in moab, there have been jumpers in the past do their first jump there. the future will no different. there will be first time jumpers there; some will be ok whilst some will not.

its tough going there with friends as a low timer and not jumping, i was unable to combat the urge to jump after only 9 jumps at toms FJC, its such an amazingly beautiful (yet not so forgiving) place. i was told that i shouldnt jump but i did anyways. thankfully all went as planned but thats not always the case. i had a hard 90 left on tombstone and damn near smacked the cliff face, scared the shit out of me but i didnt think i simply reacted and riser turned away. moab is great yet so damn powerful

knowing when to say when helps all of us prevent injury. jumping impulsively increases the odds of accidents.

when jumpers lack the awareness and skills that experience provide, they effectively play russian roulette. most of the time, they will win (thanks to wonderful equipment). this can provide them with a false sense of comfort that CAN lead to continued higher risk activity.

requiring rescue services will always generate outcry that jumpers waste tax dollars, thus BASE needs regulation. but banning will always seem easier than regulating.

when I travel, I jump with extra care. I realize I do NOT know the object well (increasing my risk) and I do NOT wish to make life more difficult for those who jump it regularly.

it's the old "with rights come responsibility" argument. it makes jumpers feel squeezed between preventing govt interest and enabling jumpers.

restraint helps prevent injury and govt involvement, but is particularly difficult for new, pumped up jumpers.

Agreed, but too often someone's poor choices end up affecting other's who may not have even been involved.

Or put another way..... one person's fun, fucks it up for everyone else.

yes ...of course others are affected...but ultimately they will suffer the consequence with loss of life, injury, community support etc...and yes of course closures to special places can happen...but still do not want to be the one who died by poor choice or the one who had a life changing accident that makes the simple things extreme...I will just have to go to a new area...but who pays attention to closure signs anyway! These problems can not be solved...issues like this are human nature...hero if you pull it off...zero if you fuck up...One persons fun may fuck it up for others...exact with good or poor choices all can change in a few moments...such is LIFE...Your Fun may fuck up someones day in the future...but i bet you still go jump...it always the other person anyway...The power of our EGOWink

Because they don't know a BASE jump isn't jus a skydive where you open at 200-300 feet instead of 2000-3000 feet and people who should know better let them.

I think we need to start basee jumping gangs like the crips and the bloods
