Unknown winds at opening altitude
Big wall, no wind on the ground, light wind at the exit point. Landing area is tight, but not super-tight. Opening at about 600ft, about 100-150 yards from LZ surrounded by tall trees (150-200ft).

Now, despite the wishful thinking about winds being light at all altitudes, the winds turn out to be quite strong (~15mph) and shifty all the way from opening to treetops.

Obviously, it's better to open right above LZ to minimize the risk of the unknown winds. But due to the nature of the jump, undershooting or overshooting (this is a wingsuit jump) is possible.

It would be nice to somehow sample the winds in 200-600ft altitude range before the jump (e.g. by groundcrew) to get an idea whether undershooting, overshooting, or 'side-shooting' is preferable. What would you do to accomplish that? Making fire to watch smoke is out, period. Launching a small helium balloon is most probably out, too, since it'll disappear too quickly from the view behind tall trees.

Ideas? Mr.G's among us? Wink

if u have to many guesses ... do not jump.

Balloonest send up a small ballon and watch it's drift to see where the sheer layer is and how strong the wind is. They have a small hand held bottle that they fill the balloon from.

but u already know this

Tip #1. The treetops swaying. This should be noted by your GC. Look up at the higher trees with binocs.

Tip #2. Almost every cliff that I have jumped has a valley below it with a river or fjord/sea that is the lowest point in the "cross section" not far from the LZ. have your GC take wind measurements there.

Tip #3. Know the diurnal winds and seasonal times.

Tip #4. Learn to read the clouds or lack of them.

Take care,
