Capturing a PAL mini DV tape using a NTSC camcorder to play it ( it works either way)
Hey did some research. For those of you who still use Mini dv; Capturing dv footage from your camcorder to your computer has nothing to do with the camcorder. As you well know that whether it is pal or ntsc you can view it on your LCD screen of your camcorder. It comes down to what your computer has been formatted to capture. You can change the settings of your computer by:
Shutting down your computer unplug and re-plug the fire wire into your computer; than reboot your computer with your your camera playing the tape you want to copy. Then open your capture program and It will reboot the computers input into the format thats playing in your camcorder.
So long story short I was able to copy a pal formated tape playing in my sony pc9 NTSC camcorder directly into my computer. You can too.........I have a mac; I don't know if that makes a difference.

It depend on which program you use, some program well lock up if the setting is ntsc and the tape is shoot as pal
I have pc and to capture video I use sony vegas, you can have ntsc and pal on the same tape and no problem capturing that entire tape with out changing the format, now avid need to change the format ever time or just lock up, I think final cut lock up if you have mixed footage too.

With the mixed footage I've had to capture the ntsc and pal separately using the procedure I mentioned earlier. I'm going to have to check out the sony vegas as it would be nice to capture the entire tape without the change.
Thanks

if you going to get a sony vegas get v.8.0 d.
other thing abut vegas is when capturing the program it well automatically save as hi res. avi file so you can export it to any other editing program with good quality video
