BASE Jumpers with Diseases
Would you as a BASE Jumper want to know if the people you were jumping with had a disease, virus, etc that could be passed to you?

I am talking about situtations where someone gets hurt and there is blood, or you have to do CPR and mouth to mouth.

Some of these situtations could put you in a position to where you could catch what ever it is they have.

Notwithstanding, we know you can wear medical gloves or a mouth piece for example to try to protect from certain things, but nothing is certain.

So would you want to know?

Do you jump with and or carry the precautionary equipment like rubber gloves or a CPR microshield ?

Should we ensure we have this? I feel we should, I would want to be able to assist shold the time come.

added: I found the following website with a CPR Microshield

They have a package that has a small case, number of gloves and a microshield for 11 bucks. I am ordering one for my first aid kit for in my car

I was thinking about this the other day when another jumper's blood got onto me. I didn't have any open sores on my skin, so I really didn't worry about it after the first minute. If someone was seriously hurt, do you think a pair of gloves and a "mouth piece" will keep all the blood off you? What if it didn't and some blood got on your skin, would you stop helping your friend? Many people can be carriers of disease without even knowing about it. If I feel ok, then I prefer not to be diagnosed with something because then my insurance may deny me benefits for "pre-existing" conditions. This is not to say carrying stuff like gloves and a mouth piece is a bad idea.

Quite frankly I wouldn't start CPR on anyone that is pulseless following blunt trauma. We (paramedics) don't do it in the field. They're dead. It's pointless. You will NOT revive them.

"WHAT IF," the guy hit hit head on the ice and fell through and was pulled out. Say he was in "suspended animation" (insert technical term)

just kidding Tongue

You know it is very difficult for laities( especially in field) to taste the pulse.

recommendation is: reanimate in all cases....till a medic has declared the person dead.

But you are right.....in some cases it may be really pointless Frown

IF worms had machine guns birds wouldn't f#@& with them. can't use "if" in a situation that's as dynamic as base. you'd be there forever!

I understand and welcome your concern. so far this topic begs the question about how much first aid equipment should be brought, how to make it as accessible as possible, etc. everyone should think about that.

but your query raises a different sort of question as well...
any jumpers with pre-existing conditions (even drug allergies) should consider informing their jump buddies. I'm not sure how something such as diabetes might complicate EMS efforts, but I bet a diabetic could tell me!

remember, we all risk ending up unconscious at some point. work things out with your jump partners!

man there is almost nothing worth reading on this site any more but i want to comment on this. Even if i knew a mate of mine had AIDS/hep A,B,C/ (insert your favorite blood/fluid bourne disease here) it would not stop me jamming my thumb into there severed artery etc to stop them bleeding out in front of me so at the end of the day i consider your question redundant. (for me personally) before any one accuses me of speaking on their behalf.
