WLO toggles
If you don't already have some of these you should get some. Probably the best $75 dollars I ever spent. If you don't believe me check out this video of my line over off an antenna.

Re: [vinnie1283] WLO toggles
How long had you been using them before this jump?

I have a mate that had a WLO save 3 jumps after installing them.

Might get myself a set

Very positive reaction, well done!

would you like to tell us about the configuration ?
-canopy type
-number of brake lines - same length or not
-type of packing - quantity of lines outside the tail pocket - tail buried or not
-brake settings
-indirect control - wraps if any
-direct control - wraps if any
-slidergate - wraps if any

WLO's were better than any health insurance on this one!Smile

Re: [vinnie1283] WLO toggles
I don't have WLO's - but can you clear them with 1 hand, and if so, how easy is it ? Some cases I doubt I would want to NOT compensate the direction of flight and/or loss of altitude from the spin.

on a positive note you can now justify pulling high :)

Great reaction time! Did I count that right, 2.5 revolutions from throw to control?Cool

good jub guy

Is that WRG shooting ground footage? Sounds like him.

To answer Paul's question, I have these same toggles and you can release them with one hand if you leave the toggle stowed and just pull on the little ring instead.

This video does bring up the question of 'what now?' once you have released one brakeline and find yourself lower than usual due to some turns.

From the video your landing looks downwind and it seems you pulled the left riser down very far, possibly stalling all or part of the canopy before it quit flying.

Did you use one toggle and the riser, or both risers?

Obviously both risers are easier to manage as the motions are the same either side, but one toggle and one riser gives you more flare power.

u must have edited a line over in that video

Re: [vinnie1283] WLO toggles
wlo's are sweet but they are also one extra thing to check while rigging up and packing...

they also add an inch or two to your brake line length, because your control line is nolonger going through and around your toggle, just around your pin.

the only time ive ever gotten hurt on a base jump, i cut away my control line on accident while clearing the brakes.

then i pounded in pretty good on both risers.

oops.

Re: [avenfoto] WLO toggles
That's why using one riser and one toggle to flare is a much better option.

If you lose one, there is no reason to not use the other.

nicely handled. i have myself a pair of those things, would rather have them and not need them than vice-versa. looked like a nice antenna, i wonder where its at......................... =)

Re: [vid666] WLO toggles
Yep, you can and should operate WLOs with one hand. The older Vertigo pin WLOs were the best, they fired the line supereasy by pulling on the ring while the toggle stayed stowed. With the new Apex WLOs you have to pull the ring a bit further down to clear the brake setting, after the line has been released from the toggle, but it still is a single one-handed move. You really should be correcting the spin with your other hand.

Jumping slider-up without WLOs is barbaric.

Hell yes it was! This guy has been BASE jumping for a bit over a month and never had a malfunction skydiving.

Although...he is a VERY current BASE jumper!!!

Well done Will! You the man! Now learn to pack!Tongue

Personally, I think you should have at least hurt your ankle on that landing...all the cool kids are doing it.Cool

Re: [Lucifer] WLO toggles
The canopy was an ace 260(5 brake lines). Tail was buried, lines didn't extend more than about 4 inches out of the tailpocket. Brakes were in the shallow setting. Used indirect control-2 wraps. Slidergate was not used although i'm considering it in the future.

The landing was downwind, turning into the wind at that point would have had me landing in a drainage with big rocks in it or a short cliff band. I landed using just risers, I was afraid using one toggle and one riser would give me an uneven flare. Although I pulled down hard on the risers I started my flare too late to completely stall the canopy. If nothing else that landing made me realize that the 3 weeks I spent at Airborne school wasn't a complete waste because I can still pull of a decent plf. This was also my 7th slider up jump since I started using the WLO toggles. The biggest takeaways i got from this is the need to release the line with one hand before unstowing the toggles so that you can use your other hand to steer. If I was closer to the antenna this would have turned out a lot worse.

Re: [vinnie1283] WLO toggles
Does your ACE have by any chance the old (different lengths) 5 brake lines configuation?

The older 5 control lines config of some canopies involved different length between the steering lines (the inner and outer ones being usually longer than the others). My guess is that it might induce a slack on the longer lines which can interfer and possibly go over the ears on deployement.

Has anyone had bad experience with using the slidergate?
I personally really like how it stages the deployement even if some manufacturers found it detrimental to heading opening. My personal opinion is that it has a really positive effect on heading on canopies that are easily sinkable (old porous 4 control lines canopies).

It could be a little detrimental if you have a canopy that stall abruptly while using the DBS, (composite upper surface - 5 ctrl lines) inducing a longer stall phase during deployement which could make the canopy more responsive to any assymetry in packing.

Again, this effect can be counterbalanced by reducing the slidergate restriction (thinner rubberband, less wraps). Any opinion on this?

Are you using the old style "bight of control lines in a rubber band" or the newer style "tailgate sewn onto the trailing edge of the slider"?

Just taking a bight of the control lines will alter the trim of the canopy a bit (because it changes the length of the control lines), and can also have a detrimental effect on heading _if_ you manage to get a slightly different sized bight between the two sides.

Using a tailgate sewn onto the trailing edge of the slider avoids these issues because the lines are still in their (normal) straight position, with no bight to change their relative lengths.

Re: [TomAiello] WLO toggles
Im using old style, larks headed rubber band on the sliders trailing edge. Never experienced the slider tailgate since I have a big mesh slider, but have had only really good results with my setup. I use a full small rubber band, two wraps, control lines only, 1" bight or smaller.

If you use a "slider tailgate", the big mesh isn't an issue. The "slider tailgate" has the tailgate attached to the center of the rear of the slider. The problems with big mesh involve using a tailgate in it's standard location (on a C line).

Not that I have a tremendous amount of related experience...but I think that all things being equal...for slider up....the "tape gate" is the simpler solution.

Re: [mbondvegas] WLO toggles
Thanx for clarification!

There was also a system that was developed by the guys who made the snekor, involving a rubberband which just kept the two rear slider grommets against eachother. Just like a tailgate with all C-D and brake lines into it; never seen it though. Clean idea to promote nose first inflation..

Thanks for posting- good save
that could have been ugly

Curious if you have open or closed corners on your container ?

Also, do you lengthen your toggle setting from slider down to slider up or leave them at the slider down position all the time ? (thanks, doing a little research project on that ).

Re: [shortleash] WLO toggles
I have open corners on my container. My toggle settings are always the same, if you want to use WLO toggles you need to fingertrap a loop in the end of your control lines to use them
