Ropes in the Swiss Valley

Please be very cautious with the existing ropes that are in place to access the exit points in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. On a recent trip to the Valley last week we where making our way down to the exit point at Gimmelwald, the first two jumpers went down to the exit point using the rope that was in place there, I went third and used the rope again to help lower myself down to the exit. After putting my weight on it as the other jumpers did, the rope snapped and I went backwards down towards the edge tumbling until I managed to get on my front. If not for a small bush about a meter from the edge I would have been in freefall.

Please, please be very cautious of the ropes at all the exit points, some are clearly very old and weathered, some are new, but are only as secure as the anchor points and knots. A lesson for everyone.

How often are the Mushroom ropes changed? I was tied off when I crossed them last time, but it still seemed pretty sketchy.

The conditions of every rope is the resposibility of every jumper.

As for myself, i would prefer there are no ropes at all and each jumper takes their own and remove it once down at the exit.

With the years, there is so much old rope hanging around...

So please rather remove the old ropes instead of blindly trust them...

Thanks a lot

Re: [leroydb] Ropes in the Swiss Valley
Just to add to this thread....

I am heading out that way in July for a couple of weeks. I intend on bringing about 50ft. of 7mm rope. I usually carry my climbing harness, rope, carabiners, etc... just in case. I can spare the rope and will make any additions/ replacements to ropes that look like they need it. No monetary donations needed.

I also intend on bringing a garbage bag with me to help in exit point clean up. This is something that I not only continually read about, but also see the need for at my areas local sites. There have been times where I have brought out BAGS (notice plural) if garbage from areas. We should all be better about this type of thing. (ie- not leaving trash in the first place)

I have rambled on enough. I just wanted others to know that I intend on leaving these exit points better than when I arrived.....

I'm going to leave some garbage at the exit points so that you have something to do. It will make me feel like I'm helping you and in turn you can feel better about yourself by cleaning up the environment. It's a win/win situationSly
