In town June 6-10... will bring rig if good chance of using it. Otherwise, looking for help on places to stay for cheap. Hotels are $250/nt online for anything in Manhattan... is it practical to get a cheaper room in NJ and take the subway/train to all the tourist spots, or is that more of a pain-in-the-ass than it's worth?

I've been to NYC twice this year, and both times I stayed at the Jazz on the Villa Hostel in Harlem. I do believe it is the cheapest bed in NYC, at under $20 a night. The neighborhood is not bad, and it is only a short walk to two different subway stations.

Edited to add: The hostel has lockers big enough to fit a rig.
