Primary stow(with rubber band)
so...witch one of you use it for slider down/off and why?, i used to have it that way before but not anymore.....of course i understand why one use this rubberband for slider up(preventing line dump)...but now i start to S-fold the lines without using this pocket and i haven`t notice any off headings during this experience...

Simple, primary stow every time, for safety.

Re: [tr027] Primary stow(with rubber band)
I've been wondering about this for a while but have been reluctant to test the theory on myself. The primary stow seems to have no function in a slider down/off deployment.

What safety is gained by it's use outside of slider up jumps?

Re: [Martini] Primary stow(with rubber band)
I think it helps reduce the chance of premature release of the tailgate and thus decrease the chance of a lineover.

Think about a situation when lines are payed out unevenly from the tailpocket and some lines stowed in the tailgate unravelled first and released it, unleashing all other stowed lines. Primary stow keeps tailgate free of tension until full linestretch, allowing the tailgate to perform its function of delayed tail expansion.

i can see what you mean when i see older/other canopies than my own..i have the newest edition of TrollDW witch have a improved linepocket channel..the way it`s now it looks almost impossible that the whole line group would come out in one bunch.
Im not sure but it`s seems to improve the inflation on the canopy by not using the rubberband..

In 2005 Marty of Asylum advised:

The primary stow, single stow, or as in a slider up deployment, indirect stow, is used slider off for a couple of reasons.

First, it minimizes the lateral spread of the canopy during line stretch. This compliments the effectiveness of the Tail gate.

Second, it insures that all the lines, and thus the canopy, will be tensioned at the same time. This aids in symmetrical pressurization. Asymmetrical will lead to the possibility of off headings.

anyone use masking tape for primary stow? I never tried it, just curious. seems it would not work well though.

masking tape instead of primary stow

What makes you think that? Just curious.

I have minimal jumps and ALL of them
have been with a regular rubber band
as the primary stow...however, if the
tape works as a tailgate why would it
not work here also?

Re: [GreenMachine] masking tape instead of primary stow
well, the rubber band seems to work extremely well for this, as soon as the PC brings canopy to line stretch, the band is easily popped off. the inertia pops the band. but with tape, the snug nature is impossible to achieve because it does not stretch to squeeze lines.
blah. im just thinking out loud. LAME.

Hey man, the masking tape thing is not to be used in place of the primary stow. It is more an example of direct slider control methods(which the opinions are many and varied). The masking tape idea, as I use it, is more of a "modified slider up tailgate extra safety precaution". The masking tape is just 3 wraps, sticky side out, around the steering lines, up high. It's a very non invasive safety precaution that could keep your steering lines a little more in order during line stretch and some folks like it and some folks don't care. It would not interfere with an initial stow or not. Lot's of different schools of thought here. Good topic. I think most jumpers pack jobs are an amalgam of several different packing styles you see as you progress through the ranks. Whatever rank means.

Speaking of mixing and matching...

Has anyone ever tried using rigger's thread
to tie certain lines or line groups together?

The stuff is super thin, light, and breaks
easy so it would not cause a hang up but
it might add a little extra precaution for
low and sketchy jumps (of course tried &
perfected first on higher and safer jumps).

Again, just like

I am not trying to re-invent the wheel,

just start using a rubberband as a PC packing aid. It'll be over sooner.

OH NO! im not useing tape as a primary stow, but i use it for both slider down and slider up tailgates. I use rubber band, two wraps under tailpocket for primary stow. just brainstorming.

Re: [dunderhead1] Primary stow(with rubber band)
You don't need to use primary stow for any non-slider deployment. You can use it but there is no difference with or with out. The only time to use primary stow is for slider-up.

hey now!

YES, green machine, I have tried to use a cutaway cable to pack my canopy. with loops TIGHT around the A,B,C,D line anchors on the canopy. The idea was to keep all the lines perfectly centered. but it was a bitch. I would pull the cable out after final folds, left a HUGE ribbon on it to avoid forgetting. I quit cause it was too much work, and I got good at packing without it.
