I remember seeing that about 9 years ago on a documentary, but no idea of it's origin. Hardcore though. Love it.

That's a dentist named Feblemeyer in the Italian Dolomites. Originally we thought this jump was made in the mid 1950s, but I'm pretty sure now it was the early sixties.

I have some information on him I was sent some years ago by a Euro-jumper, but have never run into anyone who actually knew Feblemeyer. I have some B&W photos that look a bit different, gear wise, from the vid, so it's possible he did these jumps more than once.

Just another piece of the BASE Story we need to find out more about.

Re: Another youtube
That was a gutsy effort, in a good way. I think it has been posted somewhere here, the UK board or blinc before. Do the french have a year for that jump? The tarp geeks here might be able to tell a guesstimate from the gear he was using?

After watching that, I clicked on this different kind of cliff jump (because a friend has jumped and told me about this nice place). Check out this "sponsored athlete's" effort: http://www.youtube.com/...&feature=related

Nice looking freefall/track and a "crisp" opening, but man the canopy work (I'm a shitty pilot myself but still).. He does a 180, then starts kicking air when he realises he's about to hit the cliff and lets up the brakes (looks like he lets go of the toggles completely). Why would one do that? To grab the rock?

This dayblazing crowd show could have ended a lot worse though, as reading from the poster's comments I don't think he got hurt. Lucky guy. And nice exposure for Audi, if they like that kind of stuff.

I don't know because we don't jump like that where I come from, but do many people make this kind of jumps? Daytime, big crowd, shorts & T-shirt, 'look at me I'm an awesome extreme dude' -style crappola? Or am I just hyperventilating?

Sorry for the thread drift pocbase but I just had to comment on this! YouTube is so "awesome"!

This looks like the same cliff that was jumped by MH and crew for the movie "Cliffhanger". The jump was in 1963 0r 65. Contact Eric Fradet, he knows.
Take care,

Just in case I am getting you wrong here, let me clarify; youtube has no other value than entertainment to me. Stuff gets posted at random and is fun to watch during work hours Unimpressed

Just thought this piece of footage could be of some historical value and wanted to know more about it. Nick and Space were kind enough to reply and move the thing forward.

Maybe start a thread on "Daytime, big crowd, shorts & T-shirt, 'look at me I'm an awesome extreme dude' -style crappola"; I get a feeling that doing that in Finland would lead to hyperventilation still at this time of the year.

Posted by Eric Fradet on the french forum; for some reason I always have to jump through a few hoops to post there... so I didn't.

In reply to:
bonjoour,

"Hello
I confirm that it is indeed Erich Felbmayer jumping a "bi-fente type "56" (p.c?) from "Roda d'Ivelle" in 1965 which would constitute the first known cliff jump, one year before Rick Sylvester from El Cap. Eric Felbmayer was also known as the first "Skysurfer" in history."

He was jumping what looks to be a Paracommander. At any rate, none of the parachutes of the 60's had brakes of any sort. The toggle lines simply rotated the parachute clockwise or counterclockwise. Brakes came along later.

Don't forget that there was no brain bank of basejumping experience to draw from in those days. We had to learn as we went along.

Hi Mike, my comment was not about that old video, but about that other video I posted, a tourist video from Thailand.

My hat's off to you guys (guys like you, Brian and the french guy in the video) who had the guts to explore and experiment, way back when nobody knew how to go about jumping off cliffs! Not to mention the gear that was available at the time. You rock.

That jump is in Thailand, I believe, and very popular and legal. The locals want you to dayblaze it while they drink umbrella drinks and I think there is one local that jumps it daily(like his own Thai Tombstone). I hear from climbers there that he is always looking for people to come jump his cliffs with them as well.

Re: [kege] Another youtube
dayblazing meaning illegal jump so the object is jump mostly at night, in Thailand I don't think base jumping is illegal just like most of the cliff in europa, If I can I like to jump in day time easy to see the obstacle at the LZ. less crowd is preferred though
