Re: [Waldschrat] oldest active basejumper
I'm 54 . . . But I'm only occasionally-semi-kinda-sorta-active.
I would only consider myself active compared to most of the jumpers I knew in the 80s and early 90s, as most of them quit altogether. Exceptions would be Anne, Avery, The Pick, Matt, Jay, Marta, and folks like that.
The OPs question is a bit hard to answer. Someone out there could be the oldest active BASE jumper but may have started BASE jumping two years ago. Nothing wrong with that but not comparable to someone who was already in their 50s and started early on, folks like Dick Pedley, Eric Jones, and some others.
Also it's easier to be active these days than it used to be simply because there is now more places to jump, way more reliable gear, and a wealth of accumulated knowledge. I am proud of the fact I've stuck around long enough to see this sport grow, change, and get a handle on its history. And I've been meaning to design "I survived BASE in the 80s" t-shirts.
I've been around from Boenish to Maggot, from Ravens to FliKs, from skydiving rigs to velcro to pins, from Hank-52s to vented ZPs, from roll packs to clamps, I've known humble pioneers of the 1970s and blowhard bandwagonners of the 2000s, I've seen genuine genius and splendid stupidity, I've seen joy, tears, life, and death. I've seen BASE . . .
