Yes...and usually they are disparaged by ubermooks because apparently they are so safe that you can't die from them if something goes wrong.

Because there are pillows down below and you can only reach a maximum freefall speed of 6 miles per hour.

just wondering why under 40 jumps per year doesn't qualify as an "active jumper"? so according to your profile you've been jumping for five years and have 152 jumps. so you have logged 30.4 jumps per year. have you never been an active jumper?

sorry for not updating my profile...but at the moment i have about 230jumps and 41 objects...so you need to recalculate your math.......and for the second...i have never seen myself as an "active" jumper...just a newbieWink

Was in Norway with an Aussie in his mid seventies taking his first jump course. Tough son of a bitch. Don't know how active he is, though.

The guy that took me for my first 2 is 61 now and we still jump with him when schedules allow. Still has the physical and mental ability to climb with us younger fellas. Truly an inspiration to anyone who jumps with him.

I'm 51 years old but don't quite fit your jumps per year criteria other than to say I jump as much as I can and whenever I can. Talking of that I'm returning to blighty tonight so hopefully I'm going to get a few more in. I'm missing an antenna for my number although I have done a Power Pylon a few times but I'm not counting that so if anyone out there can help an ageing but not quite infirm jumper to...

What do you think, are his reasons to take this FJC so late in his live?

Re: [Waldschrat] oldest active basejumper
<<I would like to know, how old the oldest active basejumper is and what type of jumps this person performs....this days?>>

I'm 68 years old and started base jumping in 1966, about 12 years before it was called basejumping. I haven't been much of an active basejumper through the years, but have made it a point to make at least one base jump every forty years to avoid getting rusty. My third basejump is scheduled for the year 2045.

I think its probably a reasonable assumption that I have been a basejumper longer than anyone else on this Planet, despite being among the very least experienced.

Mike,

I added your "Nugget" to the list of them on this forum the day after we talked about it last week.

But, it has to be approved (go figure, especially since I originated "nuggets" in the first place) Crazy and haven't heard back from anyone yet . . .

It was good seeing you the other night!

His name was Gordo iirc.
He did two jumps there...but because of his hip, BK carried his stashbag half way to the exit on the 2nd jump. Tongue

I also know a 68 year old (must be a magic number) with more than 500 jumps.

This guy is Gordo. He jumps at my dropzone, Elderslie, and is a top bloke!

Did his FJC in the US and did Norway the next year (07).

I occaisionally bump into an 82 yo skydiver called Hilton. His body is a bit screwed with arthritis etc. Still skydiving though. Legends both of them.

Cheers,

Ken.

Re: [Waldschrat] oldest active basejumper
I always said 5 jumps a month average was enough to be considered a active BASE jumper.I have made 100+ wingsuit flights per year since the year 2000.Every year when it is the season in Europe,as I don't jump much in America anymore I think one day I won't feel like or won't be physical able, then I buy another ticket to Switzerland..

The oldest active base jumper?

Every year I am working on it to earn that status. That is, to be active, not to be the oldest one.

how old are you @nickDG?
Shortcut
Re: [Waldschrat] oldest active basejumper
I'm 54 . . . But I'm only occasionally-semi-kinda-sorta-active.

I would only consider myself active compared to most of the jumpers I knew in the 80s and early 90s, as most of them quit altogether. Exceptions would be Anne, Avery, The Pick, Matt, Jay, Marta, and folks like that.

The OPs question is a bit hard to answer. Someone out there could be the oldest active BASE jumper but may have started BASE jumping two years ago. Nothing wrong with that but not comparable to someone who was already in their 50s and started early on, folks like Dick Pedley, Eric Jones, and some others.

Also it's easier to be active these days than it used to be simply because there is now more places to jump, way more reliable gear, and a wealth of accumulated knowledge. I am proud of the fact I've stuck around long enough to see this sport grow, change, and get a handle on its history. And I've been meaning to design "I survived BASE in the 80s" t-shirts.

I've been around from Boenish to Maggot, from Ravens to FliKs, from skydiving rigs to velcro to pins, from Hank-52s to vented ZPs, from roll packs to clamps, I've known humble pioneers of the 1970s and blowhard bandwagonners of the 2000s, I've seen genuine genius and splendid stupidity, I've seen joy, tears, life, and death. I've seen BASE . . .

He may not be the oldest active base jumper, but Bert from Quebec started in the 80's and is still active today with over 1000 base jumps. He's 54 and drove 9hrs one way, to jump with us for the weekend!!

Re: [ncjumpjunkie] oldest active basejumper
Nice, What did you guys jump?

I jumped with him from Tombstone in 2003. I'm not positive but I THINK it was his first cliff jump. He and another person didn't know the way up so I took them up and helped him modify the way he held his PC. Later that week a different cliff got in his flight path and he was injured and I'm pretty sure he stopped jumping after that.

He was fun to hang out with.

I'd rather not link it so If you search his name you'll find the info. He's posted since then and apparently was doing well.

Nah...
It mighta been his first low cliff jump, but I know that he jumped a popular cliff in Norway in 2000, and AF in 2001...

If you read this Jim, I hope you're doing well...

This is BASE 719, Jim Guyer. I'm still around good friends but with screws in my ankle and the false hip, I limp. I had almost 1200 parachute jumps when I hit the cliff on my 50th BASE jump. Tom Hamship was up there with me. I am in excellent health, stay in good condition and live near Tampa in San Antonio, FL. I'll be eighty in June. It was nice hearing from all of you.

Hey Jim...Glad to hear you're doing well.

Perhaps we can go jump a large Western US lake when access is granted...soon I hope.

The water level is at least 100 feet lower than the last time I was there. Cool
