Perrine Jump Planning
Hello all,

We had a non incident here, a broken ankle landing in the gulley that was placed on the front page of the newspaper. I guess it could have been a really slow news days , but in reality the paper just has an axe to grind with jumping in general. The chopper was called in for this life threatening injury, probably by a bystander. We as a community need to do what we can to not feed the the paper any more non-stories. We know we can't eliminate injuries so we need to focus on what to do when they happen to minimize the impact.

What to do if there is an injury:

Whether the injury is life threatening or not, call the sheriff and inform them. If you don't need assistance, tell them that. Unnecessary life flights and use of other resources is the angle the "newspaper" is trying to leverage.

If a bystander calls for help and you really don't need it (not life threatening), refuse it.

Harden up and hike out with your friend's help. Its not that far and if you jump technical sites (real base objects) long enough you are going to be involved in this type of situation as a either the injured or the helper eventually.

Call Don's boat service. He may be around and can help. 208.731.6448

Know some locals phone numbers, and call them for help. Several locals have boats and can help get you out of the canyon.

The last resort should be to ask the police or S&R to get you out of the canyon. This should only be an option if injuries are life threatening. FYI, A tib - fib, bad sprain, or broken ankle is not life threatening, and frankly, they don't even hurt that much. If you can't conceive of dealing with the pain of one footing it for a mile or two with the a couple of buddies help then you are probably better suited for a nice game of cribbage or bowling.

Also, for $50.00 you can get an annual membership in the Air St. Lukes (Life Flight).

Have a nice day

i noticed on thier website they offer corporate membership rates, would it be worth it for a local to contact them and see if they will set up a base jumper rate or program? it also could be some positive pr showing base jumpers taking an active interest in supporting local medical services

just a thought

Re: [TFBA] Perrine Jump Planning
Thanks for the info TFBA! Does the St.Lukes helicopter fly the injured individual to Boise? or to a hospital in Twin? Also, do you want to post the number for dispatch? Some people don't know the best protocol of contacting dispatch for the first jump of the day, or a late night jump. Helping to cut down on an uninformed passer by calling in a "suicide jumper". ~Kresta AKA Cribbage Master--haha

They fly to Saint Lukes Magic Valley here in Twin. If necessary (as determined by the ER here) they'll then ferry patients to the regional trauma center in Boise.

I don't know that advocating people try to hike out that far on a broken tib fib is the best idea. A while ago a mate did a tib fib skydiving, turned out to be a spiral fracture and he had a rod in his leg for over two years. Trying the above could turn a couple of months injury into a permanent disability.

I definantly agree people should harden up and hike out where they can be for cases like this I am sure the best medical advice would be splinting and not trying to walk on it. Why not have a stretcher and maybe a basic splinting kit, a few triangular bandages, wooden splints etc placed at the base so people can follow your advice?? Although I'm in Australia so what do I care ;)

Stashing a spine board and a med. kit is a really good idea. A spine board (you can even get ones that fold up and stash easily) would make it easy for a few guys to carry an injured person out (that does not have life threatening injuries). Sam splints are good since they are small, but versatile.

I'd be willing to pitch in for this too, and I'm sure a lot of other jumpers would be.

...furthermore stretcher them all the way to the local paper giving you bad press and claim the accident happened as you were walking in the door...

James, Wrong place to try and inject your limited knowledge. You've been doing a good job of trolling for info on the forums before you take the plunge. Good on ya.

But in this arena, you don't know shit. Leave it to the BASE jumpers on this. Or the folks who have actually had to function with injured limbs. Hopping with a tib/fib ain't that fucking hard. Even with little fanatical mooks shooting at you. If you ever finally get here, ask me about it...I'd be glad to tell you over some Patron. On you.

TFBA got this right. (full disclosure = I'm a member)

If you hose a landing at the potato, cowboy the fuck up and get your friends to get you out. This ain't skydiving...as soon as you figure that out...you'll go far.

hahaha mate you must have had one too many swigs from that bottle of whatever it was WE were drinking at YOUR BBQ I WAS AT AND SPOKE TO YOU FOR HOURS, hows things man?? Remember, the Aussie, we were talking about 5th Force for a while, in Idaho when I visited last year....to go BASE jumping

I still don't think its a good idea to try hiking out of the Perrine with a busted tib fib or anything else for that matter.

Re: [Jamesm] Perrine Jump Planning
Right then mate. Didn't know that was you.

Much respect for your opinion. We'll agree to disagree about the degree of ambulatory jamoke-ness post trauma!

And rare is there ever too many swigs for the Harvey from the bottle. And that THING we were drinking was the elixer of the Gods...Patron Silver.

All good mate, is that the stuff we were drinking, sounds like something they drink in the south?? Wait where is Idaho? South?? North??

;)

..also while you are clawing your way back up the mountains, I'll be carried in style atop a stashed stretcher to a waiting bevy of nurses.
