Re: [leroydb] Twin Falls Super 8... New Management... No BASE discount...
HOMEBASE Hostel in TF is a great idea . . .
I had a girlfriend who did a similar thing in Perris for skydivers. And it was a great alternative to the Perris bunkhouse and the local motels. At first, since it was a nice house, we thought it would get torn up, but except for a slight problem with some visiting Russians it never happened. And luckily she ended up selling the house right before the housing bubble popped.
The real reason I'm posting on this subject is because of how much it reminds me of something that happened a few years ago. Through another friend, who was a Hollywood type, MTV approached us at APEX about helping out with a project they were going to call, "BASE House."
The pitch was this - "BASE House is set in Twin Falls, Idaho as a group of late teen to twenty-somethings deal with the angst of young adulthood and relationships amid the back drop of BASE jumping from the Perrine Bridge."
We had a few informal meetings to discuss if we'd get involved in something like this or not. And understandably some of us were against it for various old school reasons while some others were arguing, "What the hell, let's take MTV's money and run."
But the project never got green lighted. And I think it was because MTV didn't like some of our suggestions and figured we'd be too hard to work with. They expected us to just go along with everything they wanted like lemmings which is probably how it works with most MTV projects.
One suggestion from me was to include one older BASE jumper in the house to act as a sort of mentor in both BASE and life. This wizened older veteran of the sport would provide the contrast between old and new BASE jumpers. He'd also interject BASE history into the show while the younger jumpers just wished he shut the hell up. Just like in real life, and guess who that character was patterned after?
The basic cast of characters was to come from a real cross section of BASE. There would be the "Maggot" character the most offensive of the lot, but who was merely hiding his own insecurities behind all the bluster. Then there was the "Jeb" character who lived everyday with the dream he'd do something so big and spectacular he become forever famous in the sport. Then there was "Dwayne" who pushes the everyday boundaries of BASE, and "Tom" who teaches BASE courses but as he ages slowly realizes the widening gulf between himself and his charges. And well you get the idea. Heck, this stuff practically writes itself.
But MTV, in all their wuffoness didn't get it. They wanted to put in all kinds of things they thought would work better. And it was all bad. Like one of the boys considering sabotaging another's gear over the attention of one of the girls. I remember gagging as one MTV executive said, "Whataya mean, that's not real! It's ripped straight from the headlines!" And this was when all that skydiving sabotage was making news in Great Britain.
Anyway, just a head's up. If Serena changes the name from "HOMEBASE Hostel" to "BASE House" don't be surprised if MTV comes knocking on the door . . . And if they do please don't go down like lemmings . . .
